Woodbridge, VA---The Potomac Nationals and the Carolina League have announced that five Potomac Nationals have been named to the Northern Division team for the 2019 Carolina League Mid-Season All-Star Game. 1B Aldrem Corredor , 2B Cole Freeman , C Jakson Reetz , OF Nick Banks , and RHP Andrew Lee will represent the P-Nats on June 18th at Nymeo Field in Frederick, MD.
After spending the second half of the 2018 season with Potomac, 1B Aldrem Corredor has been one of the premier RBI men in the Carolina League in his second go-around on the circuit. Through Potomac's first 60 games, the first baseman leads the team with 44 RBIs, good for second in the Carolina League. Corredor enters the final week of the first half with a .276 batting average and five home runs. Over his last 28 games, the 23-year-old has hit .345 with 27 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .500. Corredor was a Mid-Season All-Star with the Hagerstown Suns in 2017 and a Washington Nationals Organization All-Star in 2018.
In his first season with Potomac, 2B Cole Freeman has posted arguably the best offensive numbers of any second baseman in the Carolina League and paired it with solid defense up the middle. With one week left in the first half of the season, Freeman ranks fifth among qualified hitters in the 10-team league in batting average (.312), fourth in OBP (.402), third in hits (72), and fourth in runs scored (40). Drafted out of LSU in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Freeman has been the most consistent and productive hitter near the top of the Potomac order. Over the last two weeks, Freeman has hit .370 with a .442 OBP in 12 games. Like Corredor, Freeman was a Washington Nationals Organization All-Star in 2018.
With Potomac for the third season and first as the primary man behind the plate, C Jakson Reetz has been the most consistent catcher both offensively and defensively in the Northern Division throughout the first half of the season. Eight extra base hits and 14 RBIs through his first 41 games paired with a caught stealing rate of 37% (15/41) earned him the All-Star nod. Reetz's only previous All-Star honors game in 2014 when Baseball America named him a Rookie All-Star with the GCL Nationals.
OF Nick Banks rounds out the position players set to represent The Red, White, & Blue at the home of the Frederick Keys on June 18th. A solid second half of 2018 with Potomac followed a mid-season promotion from Class-A Hagerstown for Banks, who has put up better numbers across the board in 2019. A .279 hitter with six home runs and 21 RBIs through the team's first 60 games, the outfielder has provided consistent defense in all three outfield positions. After a rough first 11 games of 2019 where he went just 2-37 at the plate, Banks turned the corner and has been tremendous at the dish. Since 4/20, Banks has hit .331 with a .506 slugging percentage. Five of his six home runs have come over that span. Banks has at least one hit in 13 of his last 15 games with multiple hits six different times. As the half has progressed, Banks has gotten even better, as he has hit .410 in the last nine games. This is the third time that Banks has been named a Mid-Season All-Star, as he earned the honors in 2016 with the Auburn Doubledays and in 2018 with the Hagerstown Suns.
Splitting time between the Potomac bullpen and starting rotation, RHP Andrew Lee has done a bit of everything for Potomac so far this season. In 12 appearances, seven as a starter, Lee has gone 2-3 with a 3.35 ERA. As a starter, Lee has gone at least four innings and allowed no more than two earned runs in five of his seven starts. Lee is tied for second among Potomac pitchers with two quality starts this season. Drafted in the 11th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of the University of Tennessee, this is the first All-Star team recognition for the right-handed pitcher.
The 2019 Carolina League All-Star Classic presented by Visit Frederick is scheduled to begin at 7:15pm on Tuesday, June 18th at Nymeo Field.
