BILOXI, Miss. (July 3, 2019) - The Los Angeles Angels announced Wednesday that they have selected the contract of Matt Thaiss , a former member of the Mobile BayBears, from Triple-A Salt Lake. Thaiss is scheduled to bat seventh and play third base in his Major League debut Wednesday night at Globe Life Park in Arlington against the Texas Rangers.
Thaiss, 24, played in 89 games for the BayBears over two seasons. He finished 2017 by posting a .292 average with 25 RBIs, 15 extra-base hits, and 37 walks in 49 games with Mobile. Thaiss started off 2018 by slashing .287/.352/.490 over 40 games and was tied for the team-lead with six home runs and 25 RBIs at the time of his promotion to Salt Lake on May 22.
The Jackson, New Jersey native was selected by the Angels with the 16th overall pickin the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of Virginia. Thaiss has been an MiLB.com Angels Organization All-Star each of the past three seasons, and he is currently the No. 6 prospect in the farm system according to MLB Pipeline. In 404 career Minor League games, he has posted a career .279 average with 45 home runs and 241 RBIs.
Thaiss is set to become the 17th player to make his Major League debut for the Angels after spending time with the BayBears. He will be the 13th player from the 2018 BayBears team to appear in a Major League game. Former BayBears infielder Luis Rengifo , right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning , two-way player Jared Walsh , and left-handed pitcher Jose Suarez have all made their Major League debuts for the Angels this year.
