MOBILE, Ala. (June 12, 2018) - The Los Angeles Angels announced Tuesday that they have selected the contract of former Mobile BayBears infielder David Fletcher from Triple-A Salt Lake. Fletcher has a chance to make his Major League debut Tuesday or Wednesday in Seattle against the Mariners, before the Angels wrap up a nine-game road trip with a series in Oakland starting Friday.
Fletcher, 24, was a member of the BayBears 2017 Opening Day roster and played in 64 games. He posted a .276 average with one home run, 22 RBI, 14 doubles, and 12 stolen bases. Last May, Fletcher was named the Angels Minor League Defender of the Month, an award he received again this April and May. He committed just one error in 243 total chances with the BayBears, splitting time between second base and shortstop. Fletcher was promoted to Salt Lake on July 15 and finished the 2017 season with Salt Lake.
In 58 games with the Bees to begin this year, Fletcher led the Pacific Coast League with 25 doubles and 55 runs scored. He was third in the circuit with a .350 batting average and is currently in the middle of a 15-game hit streak.
Fletcher was named a MiLB.com Angels Organization All-Star in each of his first two professional seasons. In 2015, he hit .311 in 69 games combined between Rookie-level Orem and Class A Burlington. The following year, Fletcher spent the majority of the season with Class A Advanced Inland Empire before earning a promotion to Arkansas on August 16. He had 24 hits in 80 Double-A at-bats to finish the 2016 season.
The Orange, Calif., native was selected by the Angels in the sixth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Loyola Marymount University. Fletcher is the No. 21 prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
Fletcher has a chance to become the seventh member of the 2017 BayBears squad to appear with the Angels this season. Outfielder Michael Hermosillo , catcher Josè Briceño , and right-handed pitchers Parker Bridwell , Eduardo Paredes , Jaime Barria , and Justin Anderson have all played with the Angels in 2018.
The BayBears begin a five-game road series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Live coverage can be seen on MiLB.tv (Pensacola feed, subscription required, promo code: BAYBEARS) and heard on the BayBears Broadcast Network, the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App, with the Countdown to First Pitch starting at 6:15 p.m.
