Canning, 22, joined the BayBears on April 17 after making just two professional starts with Class A Advanced Inland Empire to begin the season. He only gave up 11 runs, 10 earned, on 27 hits in 45 2/3 innings pitched with Mobile over 10 starts (1.97 ERA). Canning was the starting pitcher in a pair of combined no-hitters on April 28 at Montgomery and May 14 against Birmingham.
He went 12 2/3 innings without allowing a hit, between May 9 and June 2. Canning also did not allow a run for 15 2/3 consecutive innings, from May 14 to June 7. In his most recent start on June 12, he held Jackson to just two hits in 5 2/3 scoreless frames. Canning was named the Angels Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May and a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star.
The Mission Viejo, Calif., native was selected by the Angels in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of UCLA. Canning is currently the No. 3 pitching prospect and No. 7 overall prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline. This is the first time he has been promoted to Triple-A.
