BILOXI, Miss. (August 22, 2017) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced Tuesday that right-handed pitcher Jaime Barria has been promoted from the Mobile BayBears to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Barria, 21, was signed by the Angels as an international free agent on April 11, 2013. In 12 starts with Mobile, he had a 1-6 record with a 3.21 ERA (22 earned runs in 61 2/3 innings pitched), 15 walks, and 47 strikeouts. In his first four starts with the BayBears in June, spanning 23 2/3 innings, he allowed just four runs (two earned) on 15 hits with three walks and 19 strikeouts. Barria represented the Angels organization in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, and he pitched a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts for the World squad.
In the first two months of the 2017 season, he made 11 starts with Inland Empire and went 4-3 with a 2.48 ERA (18 earned runs in 65.1 innings pitched). Barria struck out 57 batters and only issued 13 walks. He was named Pitcher of the Week in the California League following his start on May 19 against Lancaster, and was honored as the Angels Minor League Pitcher of the Month in May.
In his Minor League career, spanning parts of five seasons, Barria has a 22-24 record with a 3.50 ERA in 83 games, 70 starts. He spent the entire 2016 campaign in the starting rotation for Class A Burlington, leading the team with eight wins in a career-high 25 games. Barria recorded a 3.85 ERA and was a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star.
The Panama City, Panama native is currently the No. 8 prospect in the Angels organization, according to MLB Pipeline. This is the first time Barria has been promoted to Triple-A in his career.
In a corresponding move, catcher Francisco Arcia has been activated off of the 7-day disabled list.
