PENSACOLA, Fla. (June 14, 2018) - The Los Angeles Angels announced Thursday that infielder Jose Rojas has been promoted from the Double-A Mobile BayBears to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Rojas, 25, played in 85 games for the BayBears over the past two seasons. Last year, he joined the BayBears in the middle of a hitting streak that reached 25 straight games, the third-longest streak in the Angels farm system since 2009. He finished the season by posting a .227 batting average with four home runs, 20 RBIs, and 14 extra-base hits in 44 Southern League games.
After a slow start to the 2018 season, Rojas exploded in the beginning of May. He was named the Southern League Player of the Week on May 14, going 13-for-27 (.481) at the plate with four multi-hit games and hits in six of his seven games played from May 7 through 13. He homered three times in the Mississippi series, including a grand slam on May 11 when he hit for the cycle. Rojas drove in a career-high seven runs in the game and a total of 11 in the series.
In 41 games with the BayBears, Rojas slashed .300/.379/.507 with a team-high 30 RBIs. He was also tied for the team-lead with six home runs and tied for second with nine doubles.
The Anaheim, Calif., native was selected by the Angels in the 36th round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Vanguard University. He was named a California League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star in 2017, after hitting .319 with seven home runs and 50 RBIs in 79 games with Inland Empire.
In 223 career Minor League games, Rojas has a .294 batting average with 22 home runs, 131 RBIs, and 86 extra-base hits. This is the first time he has been promoted to Triple-A.
In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Samil De Los Santos has been activated off of the 7-day disabled list.
The BayBears continue a five-game road series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Thursday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Live coverage can be seen on MiLB.tv (Pensacola feed, subscription required, promo code: BAYBEARS) and heard on the BayBears Broadcast Network, the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App, with the Countdown to First Pitch starting at 6:15 p.m.
