Leading the way, in his first season as Manager of the Tourists and third as the High-A Manager for the Astros, is Nate Shaver. Joining Nate on the Tourists staff this season is

ASHEVILLE- The Asheville Tourists 2021 coaching staff was announced by the Houston Astros Player Development Department today. Leading the way, in his first season as Manager of the Tourists and third as the High-A Manager for the Astros, is Nate Shaver. Joining Nate on the Tourists staff this season is Pitching Coach Eric Nielsen, Development Coach Kyle Brennan, Trainer Brandon Zumbach, and Strength Coach Zach Reding. The Hitting Coach will be announced at a later date.

Nate Shaver joined the Astros organization in 2018 as a Developmental Coach for the Carolina League champion Buies Creek Astros. In 2019 he became the High-A Manager for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers. Nate guided the Woodpeckers to the Carolina League playoffs by securing a second half southern division title.

Asheville’s new manager, the 65th in team history, played collegiately at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon and New Mexico State University. He earned his M.S. degree in Biology and completed a PhD in Sports Psychology and Kinesiology focused on Education and conducting research related to skill acquisition and retention in athletics.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Nate leading the Tourists into this much anticipated season of Tourists baseball,” said Tourists President and Owner Brian DeWine. “His experience and level of success at the High-A level will give our team an edge night in and night out. Off the field his demeanor and leadership qualities are the perfect fit for our organization and the Asheville community. I am pleased to welcome Nate, his wife Kelsey, and their son Griff into the Asheville Tourists family.”

Shaver hails from The Dalles, Oregon. His coaching experience, prior to joining the Astros, includes three years at his alma mater, one year in the Jayhawk Collegiate league, one year at the AAA Legion level, and a stint at Wake Technical Community College.

The Tourists are scheduled to begin the season on Tuesday, May 4 with a home contest against the Brooklyn Cyclones.
