(Reading, PA) - It was another quiet night offensively for the Reading Fightin Phils as they fell 6-1 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Sunday night. The win earned Richmond the series win this week.
Richmond wasted little time getting to R-Phils starter Tyler Phillips. Shane Matheny led off the game with a single, then Vaun Brown doubled. A sacrifice fly from Andy Thomas scored a run and then back-to-back singles from Carter Williams and Jimmy Glowenke scored two more Richmond runs to make it 3-0.
Phillips would settle in after that. The righty proceeded to throw four-straight scoreless innings and allowed only one hit the rest of the way. In total, Phillips went five innings, allowing five hits and three runs, with a walk and five strikeouts.
The game entered multiple rain delays, with the first 34 minutes and the second 32 minutes. When the game resumed for the second time in the top of the sixth, Cristian Hernandez entered for Reading.
In that frame, Hernandez allowed a solo home run to Thomas to make it 4-0. Richmond added another run in the seventh. Simon Whiteman reached on a fielder's choice and Matheny followed with a single. Whiteman and Matheny stole second and third respectively, and the throw from Cody Roberts went into center field, which allowed Whiteman to score and make it 5-0 Richmond.
The Fightin Phils were held hitless through five innings. Jhailyn Ortiz broke up the no-hitter with a double in the sixth. Reading had five walks in the first two innings off Richmond starter Carson Whisenhunt but did not score. Whisenhunt only lasted two-plus innings for the Flying Squirrels.
Reading got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when Johan Rojas blasted a solo home run to left to make it a 5-1 ballgame. Ortiz then singled and Nick Podkul walked to put two runners on with two outs, but Parker Dunshee sent Casey Martin down on strikes to limit any more damage from Reading.
The Flying Squirrels wasted no time getting the run back. Glowenke led off the top of the ninth inning with a home run off Matt Seelinger to make it 6-1 Richmond.
The win went to Raymond Burgos, who improves to 4-2 on the season after three-strong innings of relief. Phillips suffered the loss despite a strong outing to fall to 3-5 on the year. With the win, Richmond improves to 4-1 in the second half, while Reading falls to 1-4 with the loss.
