SAN ANTONIO - Trent Grisham hit for the cycle as he carried the Missions to victory over the Sacramento River Cats by a score of 8-4 Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium. Grisham's historic night was capped off by a triple down the right field line in the seventh inning.
The cycle was the first by a Missions player since David Robertson completed the feat on May 2, 2011 against Double-A Midland.
Grisham got the night started in a familiar fashion as he clubbed his fourth leadoff homer of the season to even the score at one run apiece. His next at-bat yielded the same result in almost the exact same spot as his first blast. He laced a single to right field in the fourth inning and ripped a double to right in the sixth. Needing a triple to complete the cycle, the left-handed hitter yanked a three-bagger into the right field corner in the seventh.
The Missions spread their offense throughout the game as they scored at least one run in five of the eight innings they came to the plate.
San Antonio has made a habit of scoring early in ball games recently. After Sacramento plated a run in the top of the first, Grisham responded immediately with his first of five hits on the night, a solo home run. San Antonio tacked on another pair of runs in the frame on an Hernán Pérez double and a Tyrone Taylor sacrifice fly.
Grisham's base hit in the fourth added to San Antonio's advantage while Perez capped off the scoring with an opposite-field blast in the sixth.
Corbin Burnes served as San Antonio's opener and tossed the first two innings before making way for Thomas Jankins who picked up his 10th win of the season. In his first relief appearance of the campaign, Jankins spun 5.0 innings and fanned four.
The Missions and River Cats continue their three-game series Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium. Right-hander Aaron Wilkerson (7-1, 3.05) is scheduled to start for the Missions against right-hander Casey Meisner (1-0, 5.40) for the River Cats. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
-With the win, San Antonio improved to 68-40 on the season.
-The Missions scored in the first inning for the 16th time in July. In the first three months of the season they had scored in the first inning 26 times.
-Grisham continues to close in on the single-month runs record in on a number of monthly records since 2005 when MLBAM began compiling statistics. He scored three runs to increase his monthly total to 29, which is one shy of Fernando Tatis Jr.'s record.
-Grisham matched a career-high with five hits on the night.
-Grisham became the seventh Missions player since 2005 to collect at least 40 hits in a month and the second Missions player to do so this season. Mauricio Dubón accumulated 41 in June.
