NEW ORLEANS--Cory Spangenberg homered and drove in three runs and Bubba Derby fanned seven batters over four innings in relief to lead San Antonio to a 5-3 win over the Baby Cakes on Saturday night. The win gives the club consecutive victories for the first time in 16 games.
Spangenberg finished with three hits to lead an 11-hit attack for the Missions, who have banged out 24 hits in winning the last two nights. San Antonio managed only 14 hits across its previous three contests.
Veteran left-hander Drew Smyly made his Missions debut by allowing just one run over the first four innings while also fanning seven hitters. Smyly was recently signed by Milwaukee after being released by the Rangers in late June.
Mauricio Dubón doubled twice in the contest. The shortstop extended his hitting streak to eight games while recording an extra base hit for the fifth straight game.
Jay Jackson worked a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save of the season.
The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon before the all-star break. Burch Smith was the scheduled starter but was called up by the Brewers and appeared in their game on Saturday at Pittsburgh. The Missions will call on a group of relievers to get them through Sunday's affair.
Reliever Nate Griep was promoted to San Antonio from Biloxi on Saturday. The righty was 4-1, 1.51 ERA in 28 appearances in the Southern League and recorded a league-leading 15 saves.
