Omaha Regains Series Lead as Missions Rally Falls Short

SAN ANTONIO - The Storm Chasers took advantage of a rough night from Burch Smith as they scored six times over the second and third innings. Omaha regains the series lead with a 7-2 win tonight.
Burch Smith got the start tonight for the Missions and his control was problematic from the beginning to the end. Smith allowed three walks and a hit-by-pitch while surrendering a season-high six earned runs. Smith allowed six hits in the outing which is also a season-high.
The Storm Chasers attacked Smith in the top of the second inning, plating three runs on a home run from catcher Nick Dini. Omaha added three more in the third inning on an RBI single from Erick Mejia, RBI double from Elier Hernandez, and RBI single from Samir Dueñez.
After Smith settled in and pitched scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Dini recorded his fourth RBI of the night with an RBI double in the sixth inning off reliever Jon Olczak.
Omaha starter Arnaldo Hernandez, who came in with a 10.58 ERA, dazzled with six scoreless innings allowing three singles. He improves to 3-2 on the season. Lefty Tim Hill pitched a scoreless inning of relief, but Andres Machado allowed two earned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Missions scored both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to an RBI single from Michael O'Neill and a sacrifice fly from Travis Shaw. In the ninth inning, the put three different runners on base but failed to bring any of them in.
In the loss, Mauricio Dubón extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 3-for-4. Smith falls to 3-2 on the season. O'Neill and Shaw both record their second runs batted in since joining the Missions.
The Missions and Storm Chasers will wrap up their four-game series Sunday afternoon at Nelson Wolff Stadium. Right-hander Thomas Jankins will get the start of the Missions. Omaha will use Kyle Zimmer as an opener for tomorrow's game with Zach Lovvorn following him. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
