The Tampa Tarpons harnessed their superpowers on Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond Day, defeating the Daytona Tortugas at GMS Field, 5-3. LF Christopher Familia summoned the power of Thor, hammering a clutch walk-off home run to win the game for the good guys in the final frame. With C Antonio Gomez on first, Familia unleashed a Hulk-like blast which landed all the way in Wakanda to win it for the home team. It marked his first Single-A home run with the Tarpons.
Minor League Baseball and Marvel Entertainment have partnered on an exciting three-year program called “Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond” featuring 96 different Minor League clubs across all four levels. The fun began during the 2022 MiLB season with each club hosting at least one Marvel theme night at their ballpark involving popular Marvel Super Hero character appearances, special Marvel-inspired uniforms, custom Minor League Baseball designed comic books and entertaining Marvel-themed interactive promotions throughout the game. As part of the Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond series, Marvel animators have reimagined team logos for all participating clubs. Teams will be wearing these logos on field in 2024, as they defend their own diamond!

Part of the journey is the end... it took three days due to nightly thunderstorms, but the Tampa Tarpons emerged victorious against the Dunedin Blue Jays, 3-1 in five innings. RHP Luis Severino made a rehab appearance and tallied three strikeouts while holding Dunedin to just one hit over two scoreless frames. The Amazing Spencer Jones crushed a home run to right-center to lead off the home half of the first. The Tarpons would go on to score two more runs and held the Jays in the place until weather conditions ultimately left GMS Field looking like the home of Aqua-Mariner.
