TOLEDO - The Toledo Mud Hens fell to the Rochester Red Wings 12-7 on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field.

Ashton Goudeau got the start for the Mud Hens while Wily Peralta was on the bump for the Red Wings.

Rochester got it rolling right away against Goudeau, opening the game with back-to-back doubles by Darren Baker and Carter Kieboom that put the Red Wings on the board first 1-0. Kieboom would come home to score on a Franmil Reyes sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0 for Rochester.

Peralta sat the Hens down in order to begin the ballgame in the first inning, getting Justyn-Henry Malloy to strikeout, Grant Witherspoon wo fly out and Tyler Nevin to ground out.

The Red Wings came out swinging in the second inning, scoring six runs in the inning. A leadoff single by Matt Adams put the Red Wings right back to work. After a hit-by-pitch, former Mud Hen Derek Hill hit a two-run double to make it 4-0. Hill would score on an RBI single by Kieboom to make it 5-0. Baker came home to score on a Jake Alu RBI single putting it at 6-0. Reyes drove in Kieboom on a RBI fielder’s choice, becoming 7-0. That would be the end of the line for Goudeau, as Layne Henderson would be the first reliever to appear for the Mud Hens. Adams doubled home Reyes to put the score at 8-0 before a Drew Millas strikeout ended the inning. Goudeau’s final line was 1.2 innings pitched, allowing eight runs on six hits and two walks.

Donny Sands put the Mud Hens in the hit column with a one-out single in the second inning, which was followed by back-to-back walks by Andrew Knapp and Michael Papierski to load the bases with one out. A Jermaine Palacios strikeout and a Brendon Davis fielder’s choice left the bases loaded for the Mud Hens to end the second inning.

Henderson set the Red Wings down in order in the third inning to keep the score at 8-0, getting Richie Martin to strikeout, Hill to lineout and Baker to groundout

The Mud Hens would have another fruitless threat in the third inning after Malloy and Nevin both singled in the third, having two on and two out before two consecutive popouts got Peralta out of the jam.

Henderson retired all three Red Wings he faced in the fourth inning to keep it at 8-0 and would bring the end of the night for Henderson. Henderson retired the final seven batters he faced, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and four strikeouts.

Peralta would sit down the first two Hens in the fourth inning, before walking Palacios. Peralta then followed by striking out Davis to end the inning.

Brendan White would enter for the Mud Hens to begin the fifth inning. The Red Wings offense thumped White to the tune of three runs in the inning. Former Mud Hen Nomar Mazara greeted White with a leadoff double, followed by Adams’ third hit of the game. Millas would drive home Mazara on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-0. Hill doubled home Adams to make it 10-0 in favor of the Red Wings. Baker singled home Hill, putting Rochester up 11-0. That would be the end of the night for White, who pitched 0.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Sam Clay would be the next reliever to enter the game. Clay would walk Kieboom before striking out Alu to end the inning.

Wily Peralta set the Mud Hens down 1-2-3 in the fifth inning to end his outing, punctuated by a Nevin strikeout. Peralta pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three hits, three walks and six strikeouts. Peralta picked up his first win of the season, improving to 1-4, while dropping his ERA by a full run from 7.12 to 6.11.

Clay would come back out for the sixth inning, as singles from Reyes and Mazara opened up the inning, setting up a second sacrifice fly by Millas, making it 12-0 for the Red Wings. Clay would induce a flyout to center by Martin to retire the side and end his night. Clay pitched 1.1 innings allowing 1.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits, one walk and one strikeout.

Anthony Banda would be the first Rochester reliever to enter the game. Sands and Knapp would hit back-to-back one-out singles to get a threat together for the Hens. Papierski would crack the scoreboard for the Hens, hitting an RBI double, driving in Sands. Palacios would bring home Knapp on a sacrifice fly, and then Papierski would score from third on a wild pitch, making the game 12-3. Davis was called out on strikes to end the inning to close Banda’s night. Banda pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three runs on three hits and two strikeouts.

Matt Wisler would be the next Mud Hens reliever to enter the game in the seventh inning. Hill would greet the new entrant with a leadoff hustle double. Two popouts and a Reyes strikeout would get Wisler out of the inning. Wisler’s night would end, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing one hit, one walk and one strikeout.

Luis Reyes would enter the game in the seventh inning for the Red Wings. Reyes would hit Malloy to open the inning. Witherspoon would double home Malloy to make it 12-4 in favor of the Red Wings. A Nevin single and a walk to Andre Lipcius would chase Reyes and beckon Tyler Danish from the Rochester bullpen. Donny Sands would drive home Witherspoon on a sacrifice fly to greet Danish and make the score 12-5. Knapp would pick up his second hit of the evening with a two-run double to make it 12-7. Danish would get Palacios to lineout and Davis to strikeout to escape the inning. Reyes’ final line would be four batters faced, allowing four runs on two hits and one walk. Reyes did not record an out. Danish’s night would end after the seventh inning, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing one hit, one walk and one strikeout.

Garrett Hill would enter the game next for the Mud Hens in the eighth inning. Hill would strikeout the side in three different ways. Mazara was retired via a check-swing appeal strikeout, Adams was retired via a pitch clock violation on Adams that happened to be strike three, and Millas was retired on a dropped third strike. That would be the end for Hill, pitching 1.0 inning, tallying three strikeouts.

Jose A. Ferrer would enter next for the Red Wings to pitch the eighth inning. Witherspoon would draw a one-out walk, but would be stranded by Ferrer. That would be the end of the line for Ferrer, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing one walk.

Aneurys Zabala would be the final reliever for the Mud Hens as he would enter in the ninth inning. Zabala would strikeout all three Red Wings he faced swinging to end the offensive night for the Red Wings. Zabala’s final line would be 1.0 inning pitched and three strikeouts.

Jordan Weems would be the final reliever to appear for the Red Wings in the ninth inning. Weems would get Sands to popout to first base for the first out. Knapp would flyout to centerfield for out number two. Papierski would groundout to second base for the final out and seal the win for the Red Wings 12-7. Weems’ final line would be 1.0 inning pitched.
