COMSTOCK PARK, MI – The West Michigan Whitecaps enjoyed solid pitching but could not take advantage, falling to the Fort Wayne TinCaps by a score of 3-1 in front of a season-high 6,433 LMCU Ballpark faithful Saturday night.
Whitecaps starter Garrett Hill put together a solid start, tossing four innings of shutout baseball with seven strikeouts, collecting all seven punchouts through the first three frames.
However, the 'Caps couldn't muster any offense, only advancing three runners into scoring position the entire night while striking out thirteen times in the defeat.
Grant Little pounded an RBI-double in the sixth before Tirso Ornelas plated Little to put the TinCaps out in front 2-0. Adam Kerner added an insurance tally in the seventh to extend the Fort Wayne lead to 3-0. Gage Workman provided the only in-game fireworks as the Tigers No. 11 prospect opened the ninth with a solo home run to slim the TinCaps advantage to 3-1. Still, the Whitecaps could not complete the rally as Parker Meadows narrowly missed a solo homer before Daniel Cabrera struck out to end the ballgame.
Fort Wayne bullpen arm Moises Lugo (1-3) picked up his first win of the year, striking out nine Whitecaps hitters through four shutout innings. Zac Shepherd (5-2) lasted four innings while allowing three runs on three hits in his second loss of the 2021 campaign. The TinCaps improve to 29-36 while the Whitecaps fall to 30-34. The last time Hill struck out more than six opposing batters was May 18th in an 8-4 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
