EASTLAKE, OH – The West Michigan Whitecaps were forced to settle for a split of their six-game series by taking a 5-0 loss to the Lake County Captains on Sunday at Classic Park.
The Whitecaps, who held Lake County without a run in two of the first three games of this series, saw the tables turn in the Sunday shutout by stranding seven base runners and going 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
In an occurrence that stayed true to form throughout the week, the team who scored first picked up a win in every game of the six-game set, as Lake County picked up a solo home run by Milan Tolentino to open the fourth inning to take a 1-0 advantage. The remaining four Captains runs all scored without the benefit of a base hit to plate them. Justin Boyd delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth before Lake County collected three insurance runs before a throwing error by Izaac Pacheco allowed two more Captains runs to circle the bases. A Joe Lampe sacrifice fly concluded the scoring and ensured Lake County the Sunday victory.
The Whitecaps record falls to 32-30, while the Captains record improves to 29-33. On the mound, two pitchers threw for both sides as ‘Caps lefty Carlos Pena (0-5) suffered a tough-luck fifth loss of the season despite tossing six frames and allowing two runs on just one base hit while surrendering four walks and striking out six. Lake County starter Reid Johnston (5-3) did not allow a run in 5.2 innings while striking out six batters of his own in his fifth victory before Trenton Denholm hurled the final 3.1 frames while striking out three to earn his first save. Denholm finished the series tossing 7.1 scoreless innings.
