FORT WAYNE, IN - Jace Jung’s go-ahead two-run double broke an eighth-inning tie as the West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Tuesday night at Parkview Field by a score of 5-1.
Jung, the Detroit Tigers first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, was involved in all four runs West Michigan scored over the final two innings. The Whitecaps remain three games back of the Midwest League Eastern Division leading Lake County Captains in the second-half playoff standings with 11 games remaining after Lake County defeated Great Lakes on Tuesday in Midland.
West Michigan opened the scoring with the tenth home run of the season for Josh Crouch, who joined Jake Holton as the only Whitecaps with double-digit homers this season. In the fifth, pitcher Carlos Guzman hit Fort Wayne infielder Rey Ilarraza with a pitch with two outs, opening the door for a Justin Farmer run-scoring double to tie the game at one. The score remained the same until the eighth when Jace Jung came through with a go-ahead two-run double to break the 1-1 tie and give West Michigan a 3-1 lead. Jung scored on a wild pitch later in the inning and reached on an error in the ninth to increase the ‘Caps lead to 5-1.
RJ Petit (2-1) enjoys his second win of the season while Keegan Collett (1-1) takes his first loss as a TinCap. The ‘Caps improve 64-57 and 33-22 overall, while the TinCaps fall to 20-34 in the second half and 47-73 overall. Justice Bigbie and Eduardo Valencia each recorded a pair of his in the victory, while Valencia reached base in all four of his plate appearances on Tuesday night.
