WINSTON-SALEM, NC (May 31st, 2024) – The Winston-Salem Shag fell to the Hickory Crawdads, 4-1, on Friday evening at Truist Stadium in front of 7,934 fans.

Hickory (20-29) got on the board in the top of the third after two quick innings for both sides. Winston-Salem (23-26) starter, Peyton Pallette, worked through two scoreless innings, but after a walk to lead off the third, Yosy Galan came home to score the game’s first run on an error giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Shag offensively could not figure out Crawdads starter, Joseph Montalvo, who allowed only three hits across five shutout innings. In the third, Loidel Chapelli led off the frame with a double but was stranded while in the fourth, Shawn Goosenberg doubled with one out but the Dash could not bring him home.

In the sixth already leading 1-0, Hickory added to its advantage. Luis Mieses doubled and came home to score on another error on a steal giving the Crawdads a 2-0 lead.

The bullpen for Hickory followed Montalvo’s lead, keeping the Shag bats at bay, and in the top of the ninth, the Crawdads added insurance. Galan led off the inning with a homer and Cam Cauley singled home a run putting the Crawdads up 4-0 going to the bottom of the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth with one out, the Shag loaded the bases with Chapelli getting Winston-Salem on the board with an infield single. With the go-ahead run at the plate for Winston-Salem, Crawdads reliever, Gavin Collyer, settled down getting a pop-out and a strike out to hold off the Shag, 4-1.

Winston-Salem and Hickory meet for game five on Saturday evening. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
