Four eighth-inning runs for the Biloxi Shuckers (49-37) coupled with ten strikeouts from RHP Marcos Diplan led to a 5-1 Shuckers win over the Jackson Generals (45-41) on Sunday afternoon at MGM Park.
In just his third start at the Double-A level, Diplan tossed a season-high 6.1 innings and left the game in line for the win. His ten strikeouts tied a season high, falling one short of a career best for the Brewers' #11 prospect.
The Shuckers handed their starter a slim advantage when Lucas Erceg belted an opposite field solo home run to left center in the bottom of the second off starter RHP Justin Donatella, his seventh on the season. The blast was the only hit Donatella allowed over five frames.
Jackson tied the game in the top of the eighth with a pair of two-out hits off RHP Daniel Reynolds (BS, 1 / W, 2-0). Domingo Leyba came home from second on Rudy Flores' opposite field single to left field through the shift to pull Jackson even at one.
In the bottom of the stanza, the Shuckers plated four quick runs to pull away from the Generals and LHP Daniel Gibson (L, 2-1). Max McDowell started with a single. After a sacrifice bunt and walk, pinch-hitter Gabriel Noriega scalded a single that bounced into centerfield off Galli Cribbs Jr.' glove at shortstop. Two batters later, Troy Stokes Jr. added the insurance with a two-run triple. Previously 0-for-3, the three-bagger extended his on-base streak to 16 games.
LHP Brad Kuntz (H, 1) and RHP Jon Olczak each provided scoreless outings in relief to aid in the Shuckers' victory.
The two sides partake in the second game of a four-game set on Monday night at 6:35 PM CT. RHP Zack Brown (7-0, 2.44) gets the ball for Biloxi to face RHP Joel Payamps (7-2, 2.54) in a star-studded pitching matchup on Doggone Monday presented by Raising Cane's.
