The Biloxi Shuckers (70-53, 29-24) used eight strikeouts from RHP Conor Harber as part of a 3-1 win over the Mobile BayBears (60-60, 23-29) on Thursday night at MGM Park. Blake Allemand collected three hits and a walk in four plate appearances en route to the win.
Harber and BayBears starter LHP Patrick Sandoval combined to allow just one run through the first five innings. Zach Houchins lifted a solo home run to left field in the top of the first, but Harber settled in after the first. The righty tied a career high with eight strikeouts and surrendered just three hits over his five frames, retiring eight BayBears in a row at one point. In his Double-A debut, Sandoval tossed 4.2 innings without allowing a run. He has now pitched 19.1 innings since being traded to the Angels organization and has not given up a run.
The Shuckers plated two of their three runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to the middle of the order. Allemand led off with a single. After a wild pitch moved him to second, Clint Coulter slapped a ground ball to right field to tie the game. A second wild pitch from RHP Dario Beltre (L, 1-2) advanced Coulter to second. Tyler Heineman then sent a ground ball to Houchins at first. The Mobile first baseman tried to peg Coulter advancing to third but sailed the ball into the seats, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The BayBears unleashed six wild pitches in the game.
The insurance run came in the form of a two-out single in the seventh from Allemand, scoring Trent Grisham.
The Shuckers' two-run sixth was sandwiched between a pair of impressive 1-2-3 innings from rehabber RHP Matt Albers (W, 1-0). The righty struck out five of the six batters he faced to earn the win. He has now retired all nine batters over two relief appearances.
RHP Jeff Ames (S, 1) was called into extended relief duty as well and promptly shut down the BayBears offense over the final two frames. Ames stranded a leadoff double in the ninth and fanned four batters to bring the BayBears strikeout total on the night to a season-high 17 for Shuckers' pitching.
LHP Cameron Roegner (0-0, 2.45) takes the ball for Biloxi on a Fireworks Friday night at 6:35 PM CT, as he faces Mobile and starter RHP Jose Rodriguez (7-9, 6.07). It's also Southern Miss Night at the ballpark, where fans are encouraged to wear their black and gold to the park.
