After two days away from the game, the Biloxi Shuckers (54-39, 13-10 2nd Half) completed their suspended game from Friday night with a 4-3 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts (44-48 ,8-15) before storming back to win their seven-innings game 6-2 on Monday night at MGM Park.
Game One (Suspended Game)
Biloxi and Chattanooga resumed their game that was suspended on Friday night heading to the fourth inning. The Shuckers held a 1-0 advantage when the game restarted thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jake Gatewood against LHP Packy Naughton (L, 4-6) in the first inning on Friday night.
The Shuckers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to one big swing. Gatewood worked a full-count walk and swiped second before Cooper Hummel tucked a two-run homer inside the right-field foul pole, his seventh longball of the season, to give Biloxi a 3-0 lead.
RHP Johan Belisario (W, 8-0) took the lead and ran with it, allowing just one run in his four frames of work. RHP Cody Ponce (H, 6) added a scoreless inning for the Shuckers in the top of the eighth to maintain a 3-1 lead. Patrick Leonard gave Biloxi some wiggle room in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to right, his ninth of the year, pushing the Shuckers to a 4-1 lead. Leonard would finish a triple shy of the cycle in the suspended game, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, an RBI and a run scored.
Holding a three-run lead, RHP Nate Griep (S, 16) entered for the Shuckers, his first appearance with Biloxi since July 4. The righty allowed two runs to score on three singles and two walks but stranded the bases loaded to secure his league-leading 16th save.
Game Two
In their seven-inning game, the Shuckers turned to RHP Dylan File (W, 4-1), who allowed just one baserunner on a hit-by-pitch in his first three innings of work. The Lake Havasu native ran into trouble in the fourth when Mitch Nay singled and Gavin LaValley singled and advanced to second on the throw, putting two men in scoring position with one out. Brantley Bell reached on a fielding error that allowed Nay to score, giving Chattanooga a 1-0 lead. Michael Beltre added on in the ensuing at bat, driving in a run on an RBI groundout to double the Lookouts advantage.
Gatewood cut into the lead in the home half of the fourth with a 404-foot shot to left, his seventh of the year, pulling the Shuckers within a run at 2-1. The homer was the lone hit allowed on the night by LHP Reiver Sanmartin, who tossed 5.1 innings.
Biloxi's big rally came in the bottom of the sixth. Corey Ray started the comeback with a one-out walk, ending the night for Sanmartin. RHP Jesse Stallings (L, 0-2) came out of the bullpen and was greeted by back-to-back singles from C.J. Hinojosa and Leonard, tying the game at 2-2. Chattanooga again went to their bullpen, bringing out LHP Juan Martinez to face Hummel, who grounded a ball deep in the hole at short to drive in the go-ahead run on an RBI fielder's choice. Weston Wilson followed with a double to the right-field gap, sending home a pair of runners to stretch the Shuckers advantage to 5-2. A throwing error on a ground ball allowed Wilson to score, pushing Biloxi to their 6-2 lead.
RHP Devin Williams came in for the seventh and pitched a perfect inning, retiring the side on 14 pitches while striking out two. In the second half of the Southern League season, Williams has not allowed a run and given up just three hits and one walk in 8.1 innings.
