Looking for a fourth win in a row, the Biloxi Shuckers (34-24) encountered crafty pitching and were held to a lone run on Wednesday night, falling to the Mississippi Braves (26-31) 5-1 at Trustmark Park. Cooper Hummel's home run provided the only run of the game in the first loss to the M-Braves since 2018.
Mississippi grabbed their first lead of the series with a two-run third inning against Drew Rasmussen (L, 0-1). Christian Pache and Drew Waters linked for consecutive singles before Ryan Casteel lined a ball over the head of Joantgel Segovia in center for a two-run double. Rasmussen recovered by retiring the side in order in the fourth and proceeded to work 4.1 innings, the longest start of his career. Biloxi's right-hander allowed just the two runs, walked two and struck out six but also suffered the first loss of his career in the process.
Marcos Diplan took over on the mound in the fifth, walked two hitters and gave up a Riley Unroe RBI single that made it a 3-0 game.
Ian Anderson (W, 3-4) limited Shuckers baserunners throughout his night on the mound. The Braves righty allowed just four runners on a walk, two singles and an error over his first five innings. In the sixth, Cooper Hummel connected for the only run of the night against Anderson, slugging his fifth home run of the season to center field and cutting the deficit to 3-1. The M-Braves starter worked 5.2 innings and struck out seven before turning over to the bullpen.
Facing Cameron Roegner in the seventh, the M-Braves capped the scoring and jumped out to their biggest lead of the game. Waters reached for the fourth time with a one-out double and scored on a Tyler Neslony base hit into center field. Neslony advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch and was plated in the next at bat, a single from Casteel to conclude the inning with a 5-1 lead.
Out of the bullpen Thomas Burrows (H,1) retired four in a row and Jeremy Walker tossed two scoreless innings, stranding a pair of Biloxi runners in scoring position to end the ninth. The loss drops the Shuckers to second place in the South Division, a half game back of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos after their Wednesday night contest was postponed due to weather.
The Shuckers conclude their series with the M-Braves on Thursday with a 6:35 pm first pitch. Biloxi will send RHP Bowden Francis (1-4, 6.00) to the mound and Mississippi will throw LHP Kyle Muller (4-1, 1.97).
