Ponies Slug Their Way to Victory at Akron on Thursday

AKRON, Ohio – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (34-30) slugged three home runs and beat the Akron RubberDucks, 9-5, on Thursday night at Canal Park. The Ponies have taken each of the first three games in the series.

Binghamton’s offense was highlighted by Rowdey Jordan’s two-run homer in the seventh that extended its lead to three runs. Jordan has homered in three-straight games this series and has driven in nine runs in that span. He is riding an 11-game hitting streak.

Binghamton put up a four-spot in the top of the first against Doug Nikhazy (0-1), before Brandon Sproat (2-0) even took the mound. Alex Ramírez led off with a double and Jordan followed with an RBI double to make it 1-0. Later in the frame, Kevin Parada hit an RBI double, and Jaylen Palmer hit a two-run single to put Binghamton up 4-0.

Sproat earned the victory, after allowing four runs over six innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Akron (35-31) cut its 4-0 deficit to 4-3 after three innings. Kahlil Watson hit a solo homer in the first. Watson then drove in a run on a groundout and C.J. Kayfus scored on a wild pitch in the third inning to cut Akron’s deficit to one run.

Omar De Los Santos crushed a solo homer in the fifth inning to put Binghamton up 5-3. De Los Santos now has three Double-A hits and two home runs.

Akron got a run back in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Alexfri Planez, which cut Binghamton’s lead to 5-4.

Wyatt Young led off the seventh inning with a single and later scored on Jordan’s two-run blast. In the eighth inning, Parada hit a one-out single and Nolan McLean hit an opposite-field two-run homer to put Binghamton up 9-4. It marked McLean’s third Double-A home run.

The RubberDucks got a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Yordys Valdés, which cut Binghamton’s lead to 9-5. It was an unearned run for Nolan Clenney, who shut the door in the ninth.

The Rumble Ponies continue their road series with the Akron RubberDucks (Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians) at Canal Park on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on WNBF News Radio 1290 & 92.1 FM.
