Proctor, four others combine to no-hit Jupiter, 1-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - RHPs James Proctor, Vin Timpanelli, Ricky Karcher, Nick Hanson, and Carson Spiers etched their name into the record books on Saturday night. The five arms combined on a 16-strikeout, 1-0 no-hitter of the Jupiter Hammerheads in front of a sellout crowd of 1,194 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The no-hit performance is the second in Tortugas' (9-8) history. RHP Tyler Mahle threw a no-no for Daytona in Jupiter against the Hammerheads on June 13, 2016. The current Cincinnati Reds starter allowed one baserunner on a hit-by-pitch in the third inning that day.

Daytona scratched across the only run they would need in the first. With no one on and two out, 3B Rece Hinds (1-4, R, 2B, SO) reached on a fielding error to keep the rally alive. Following a walk to RF Austin Hendrick (1-3, BB, SO), CF Allan Cerda (1-3, 2B, RBI, 2 SO) stung one that stayed fair along the third-base line. Hinds scored from second on the two-base hit to put the Tortugas ahead, 1-0.

Proctor (5.0 IP, BB, 11 SO) — who earned his second win — stole the show from there. The Princeton University alum permitted only two men to reach base — on a hit-by-pitch and walk — in the fourth. The 11-strikeout performance marked the second-highest total since the franchise rebranded in 2015. Proctor’s 11 strikeouts were the most since LHP Amir Garrett whiffed 12 Clearwater Threshers at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on May 30, 2015.

Jupiter’s most potent threat came against Timpanelli (2.0 IP, 3 BB, 5 SO) in the sixth. Listed as a catcher in the 2021 Reds media guide, the converted pitcher walked the bases loaded. However, the Staten Island native struck out 2B Federico Polanco (0-4, 3 SO) swinging to keep the lead and no-hit bid intact.

Timpanelli struck out the side in the seventh before handing the reigns to Karcher. Unfortunately, the Saline, Mich. native was pulled due to injury after one pitch. Hanson (1.0 IP, 2 BB) issued a pair of walks but was aided by a caught stealing and a couple of ground balls to second.

Spiers (1.0 IP, BB) — who threw 6.0 shutout innings for his first professional victory against Jupiter on Tuesday — entered to seal the deal in the ninth. The former collegiate reliever yielded a leadoff walk but immediately induced a double play before getting C Cameron Barstad (0-4, 3 SO) to ground out to second, sealing the no-hitter and his first professional save.

RHP Matt Givin (5.0 IP, 2 H, R, 3 BB, 4 SO) suffered the tough-luck defeat, his first of the season. The Hammerheads starter offered just one unearned run and retired 11-consecutive hitters in one stretch from the end of the first until a walk in the fifth.

The Tortugas wrap up the 12-game homestand on Sunday with a Bark in the Park and Tiny ‘Tugas Night. For just $2, fans can purchase a “pooch pass” so their four-legged friend can enjoy a nine-inning vacation of their own. All Tiny ‘Tuna members will be able to participate in activities during the contest. Gates are set to open at 4:30 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 5:35.

RHP Carson Rudd (1-2, 3.00) is scheduled to make his second professional start for Daytona on Sunday, as they search for the series win. Jupiter is projected to counter with RHP M.D. Johnson (0-1, 8.44).
