Bulls center fielder Josh Lowe launched a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth and southpaw starter Dietrich Enns recorded a quality start in Durham’s 3-2 victory over the Charlotte Knights in front of 4,753 on Friday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the eighth, LF Bulls Dalton Kelly dropped a single to right to represent the tying run. Lowe would later smash an opposite field blast with two outs to give Durham their first and only lead of the contest. Durham reliever Brian Moran then shut the door in the ninth to notch his first save.
Enns (6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 K) yielded two runs on just two hits over his six strong innings, adding nine strikeouts. The lone blemishes on his resume were solo shots from 3B Jake Burger and RF Mikie Mahtook, which came in the first and fifth frames, respectively. Durham relievers Phoenix Sanders (1.0 IP, K), Chris Mazza (1.0 IP, 2 K) and Moran (1.0 IP, 3 K) combined for the final three frames, with Mazza earning the win, while Charlotte lefty Nik Turley (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, K) suffered the defeat.
Lowe’s longball was the 31st hit by Durham this year. The Bulls had entered play today leading all minor league baseball clubs, and have left the yard in all but two of their 16 contests thus far in 2021.
The two teams are set to face off again on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm ET. RHP Joe Ryan (1-2, 7.11) is anticipated to get the nod for the Bulls, while the Knights are scheduled to turn to LHP Matt Tomshaw (0-1, 7.36) Tickets with socially-distanced seating for that game and all remaining Bulls home games in May are available at durhambulls.com.
