What's new in 2022 at Southwest University Park

EL PASO – April 6, 2022 – The El Paso Chihuahuas, El Paso Locomotive FC, and Southwest University Park announced today new features, food, and policies that await both Chihuahuas and Locomotive guests entering the ballpark for their respective 2022 seasons. The Locomotive play Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m.

EL PASOApril 6, 2022 – The El Paso Chihuahuas, El Paso Locomotive FC, and Southwest University Park announced today new features, food, and policies that await both Chihuahuas and Locomotive guests entering the ballpark for their respective 2022 seasons.

The Locomotive play Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. and the Chihuahuas home opener is slated for Tuesday, April 12, at 6:35 p.m.

Highlighting the improvements to Southwest University Park is the new Musco Stadium Light System. The LED stadium lighting is safe, consumes less electricity, reduces energy costs, provides brighter lighting for games and matches, and improves the guest experience with the ability to flash, change colors, and can be choreographed to music.

Southwest University Park added a lactation room located on the club level behind Section 214. The new room provides mom’s who are still breastfeeding a private area. The room is outfitted with a swivel chair, changing table, diaper pail, and sink.

Professional Sports Catering (PSC), the food and beverage provider of Southwest University Park, will have several new offerings for fans this season. Chico’s Cantina, located behind Section 122, has been rebranded as Chico’s Eats & Treats featuring a dessert fare including soft serve ice cream in a cone, sundae, or a cup.

The Largarto Dog & El Vampiro Dog are new takes on the popular Juarez Dogs located at the portable at Sections 105 & 124. The Largato Dog features a bacon wrapped hot dog topped with a chile relleno, pinto beans, spicy ranch, and guacamole and El Vampiro Dog is sure to make fans’ mouth water with a bacon wrapped hot link, topped with guacamole, spicy ranch, and Chihua’rrines crumbles.

Other changes include new coaching staffs that bring years of experience to El Paso, new fascia ribbon displays on the first and third base side, and rebranded areas around the Southwest University Park concourse.

WHAT’S NEW IN 2022

SOUTHWEST UNIVERSITY PARK

• MUSCO LED STADIUM LIGHTS – Contains new LED light technology, the new system is safe, consumes less electricity, reduces energy costs, provide better lighting systems for players, and most of all, improves the fan experience. The lights are able to flash, change colors, and can be choreographed to music.
• MITSUBISHI FASCIA DISPLAY - Southwest University Park added new ribbon boards on the first and third base sides. The displays are 30% brighter than the original boards, have an increased digital space, and are three times sharper.
• LACTATION ROOM – Located on the club level concourse behind Section 214 is the new Lactation/Nursing room. The new room features a swivel chair, sink, changing table, diaper pail, giving mom’s a comfortable and private space with their baby.
• SPEAKING ROCK PLAZA – The Santa Fe Plaza, located upon entrance of Southwest University Park on Santa Fe Street has been renamed the Speaking Rock Plaza.
• AT&T FIESTA PATIO – The Fiesta Patio has a new name! The Chihuahuas & Locomotive are proud partners of AT&T and the newly branded AT&T Fiesta Patio located below Sections 101-103.
• CHICO’S EATS & TREATS – Located behind Section 122, Chico’s Cantina is now the new Chico’s Eat & Treats! The stand will contain the ballpark fare but will include more desserts for those with a sweet tooth. Chico’s Eats & Treats will feature soft serve cones, sundaes, ice cream floats, ice cream cookie sandwich, and a banana split.

• COACHING STAFF CHANGES – Former Major League infielder Jared Sandberg has been named the new manager of the El Paso Chihuahuas becoming the sixth manager in Chihuahuas history. The Chihuahuas’ new coaching staff includes pitching coach Mike McCarthy, hitting coach Jonathan Mathews, bench coach Robby Hammock, athletic trainer Brad LaRosa and strength coach A.J. Russell.
• DAY OF THE WEEK PROMOTIONS: New to the Day of the Week promotions schedule are Wine & 9 Wednesday and Sunday Funday Seltzers.
• Wine & 9 Wednesday – includes $4 Sutter Home single serve wines available on the concourse; ½ price bottles in the suites; rotating $9 food special; available 2.5 hours after gates open
• Sunday Funday Seltzers - $5 12oz seltzer cans; assorted flavors; available at the Pepsi Grab N Go stands
• LARGER BASES: The size of first, second and third base will be increased from 15 inches square to 18 inches square at all full-season affiliates to reduce player injuries. Bigger bases were used in 2021 at the Triple-A level and in the Arizona Fall League and were associated with a decrease in the severity of base-related injuries. In addition, the reduction in distance between bases led to a modest increase in the rate of successful stolen base attempts.
• AUTOMATED BALL-STRIKE ("ABS"): In select games in Triple-A, ABS technology will be used to call balls and strikes. In Triple-A West, umpires will call balls and strikes through May 15, and the ABS system will be utilized in all games beginning May 17. In both leagues, the ABS strike zone will approximate the strike zone called by high-level umpires.
