How was the new Oklahoma City Comets name and brand developed?
Previously, the Los Angeles Dodgers were part of our team ownership group until 2021. The Dodgers allowed us to continue to use their name as we transitioned to new ownership with Diamond Baseball Holdings and up to our current focus of creating a new, local identity. In December 2023, we announced an upcoming name change and played the 2024 season as the Oklahoma City Baseball Club.
Although we are proud of our ongoing affiliation with the Los Angeles Dodgers, we wanted to create an identity that reflects our local community and celebrates what professional baseball means to our hometown, while also guiding us into the future.
Hall of Fame center fielder Mickey Mantle has always had a key presence at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark and is one of the greatest baseball players to hail from the state of Oklahoma. He was born in Spavinaw, Okla., and grew up in Commerce, Okla., becoming known as the “Commerce Comet” during his legendary career. Mantle slugged 536 home runs and won seven World Series titles during his 18 years with the New York Yankees and is one of the inspirations behind the Oklahoma City Comets name.
We have celebrated Mantle at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark for years. A nearly eight-foot-tall bronze statue of Mantle greets fans outside of the Mickey Mantle Gate entrance. Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark stands on Mickey Mantle Drive and Mantle’s likeness can be seen gracing the end of each aisle of seats throughout the stadium.
As the Comets brand developed further, a space theme emerged inspired by the legendary “shooting ball” logo of Oklahoma City’s parent club the Los Angeles Dodgers. Additionally, space and space exploration encourages us to look toward the future and consider what is possible — similar to the hopeful feeling baseball fans share each spring as their team takes the field to embark on a new season or the aspirations shared by youth players on baseball diamonds throughout Oklahoma aiming to soar to success like the “Commerce Comet.”
How was the new team name selected?
The local community and key stakeholders played a significant role in selecting our new team name. We hosted focus groups with community members and reviewed a high volume of feedback from fans via social media and email submissions.
Are you still affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers?
Yes! Our affiliation, or Professional Development League (PDL) license, with the Los Angeles Dodgers is in place through at least the 2030 season. Oklahoma City will remain the Triple-A affiliate of the Los
Angeles Dodgers and feature players one step away from Major League Baseball for years to come — just as we have since our affiliation began with the 2015 season.
Will the gameday experience change at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark?
Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark will have a fresh look for the 2025 season with updated Comets branding and signage throughout the stadium, along with a large, colorful Comets mural painted on the concourse floor inside the Johnny Bench Gate located behind home plate.
New marks, logos and colors will be seen throughout the ballpark and players will take the field in Comets uniforms and hats for the first time in 2025. Our on-field entertainment crew will receive a fresh identity and uniforms for 2025 and will be joined by new mascots anxiously awaiting the chance to meet with fans. Stay tuned as more information will be unveiled about our new mascots leading up to next season!
While the stadium will have an updated appearance, the family friendly environment, great food and fun you are accustomed to experiencing on game days at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark will remain. Additionally, the top talent in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system will continue to take the field in Oklahoma City.
