Great Falls, MT - Up 4-3 with two outs in the top of the ninth, the Helena Brewers lead disappeared as three straight Great Falls singles knotted the game up at four. It would be the Brewers that had the last laugh, as with two out and nobody on, Chad McClanahan doubled, and David Fry then followed with a base hit to left center, easily scoring McClanahan to give the Brewers the win. Helena has walked off Great Falls twice in 2018.
Great Falls jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a two run first inning blast from Lenyn Sosa. It was the first home run that starter Max Lazar had allowed in four starts.
Lazar locked in from there, and Helena got him a run back in the third thanks to a Je'Von Ward RBI single. Ward with the hit became the first Brewer to drive in a run in three straight games.
Great Falls extended the lead back to two in the fifth, as Ian Dawkins reached on a Jean Carmona error, and scored on a Sosa double. In the sixth, Roberto Delgado came in and ran into trouble, as a walk and a double put runners at second and third with nobody out. The infield came in, and Romy Gonzalez grounded out to second for the first out. Then third baseman Nick Egnatuk made the play of the day, fielding a grounder from Amado Nunez, tagging the lead runner Corey Zangari leaning off of third, and then fired the ball to first for the inning ending double play.
Helena got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, as Egnatuk brought home David Fry with a ground out, cutting the deficit to a single run. In the seventh though, the tide turned for Helena, as Bryan Torres started the frame with a single, and pinch runner Yeison Coca got to third thanks to a one out infield single from Jesus Lujano and a throwing error from Sosa. Ward then scorched a ball that shortstop Ramon Beltre couldn't knock down, rolling into left field for a hit and tying the game at three. Jean Carmona then blooped a ball down the left field line for a double, plating Lujano and giving Helena their first lead.
Kody Rock (W, 1-0) entered and got the side in order in the eighth, and then retired the first two in the ninth. Amado Nunez kept the game alive with a single, and Gunnar Troutwine followed with one of his own, moving pinch runner Jay Estes to third. Ramon Beltre then hit a chopper to the right side of the infield that slipped through, scoring Estes to tie the game. Rock then got Dawkins to ground out, ending the inning.
Jack Maynard (L,0-1) got the first two to start the ninth, and was a strike away from sending the game to extras. Chad McClanahan took a two strike pitch and corked it into the right field corner for a double. That set the table for David Fry, who took a meatball and pounded it into the left center field gap, scoring McClanahan for the win.
The Brewers look to sweep the Voyagers in the brief two game series, sending Justin Bullock to the hill tomorrow. Great Falls will counter with Jason Bilous. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM MT. Tomorrow, if you come to the gate, you'll get $3 general admission seats! Visit helenabrewers.net for more information.
