San Jose, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino got a game-tying two-run homer from Cade Cabbiness in the seventh but could not stop the San Jose offense and fell 6-3 in the finale of a six-game set at Excite Ballpark. The Giants took five out of six games in the series, the only time the two clubs are scheduled to meet in 2021.

Inland Empire (39-38) took a 1-0 lead in the first courtesy of leadoff man D’Shawn Knowles who opened the game by smacking a double off the wall in center. Knowles then surprised the Giants when he took third base on a routine throw down to first following a strikeout. SJ starter Ty Weber then threw a wild pitch and Knowles scored. The Giants (51-27) immediately responded with three-consecutive one out hits against IE starter Connor Van Scoyoc capped by Luis Matos two-run safety. The Giants made it 3-1 in the seventh on Casey Schmitt’s RBI triple to center. It was Schmitt’s third hit of the game as the SJ third baseman finished a homer short of the cycle. After San Jose reliever Abel Adames had rolled through his first two perfect innings with five Ks, the Sixers jumped on the righty in the seventh. Braxton Martinez, who had doubled earlier in the contest, singled to open the seventh. Cade Cabbiness followed with a mammoth two-run homer to right field that tied the game at 3-3. The homer was Cabbiness’ second homer of the series and as a professional player. Gabe Matthews followed with a double to chase Adames and put the go-ahead runner at second. Matthews has now hit safely in all three games he has appeared as a pro. Brooks Crawford (4-0) came to the rescue for San Jose as the righty got the next two outs on two pitches to keep the game tied. The Giants responded quickly as Abdiel Layer singled versus Sixers’ righty Chase Chaney (0-1) and scored on Luis Matos’ RBI single for a 4-3 lead. Matos had three hits in the game. Layer added the icing on the cake in the eighth with a two-run homer to left, his eighth of the year.

The 66ers open six-game series at Visalia Tuesday at 6:00 pm. The contest can be heard live on 66ers.com.
