EASTLAKE, OH – After each series this season, the Lake County Captains will spotlight a Captain of the Week, presented by Official League, showcasing a player and their strong performance over the previous week.

For the week of April 23 through 28, Lake County is recognizing INF Alex Mooney, MLB Pipeline’s No. 20 Cleveland prospect, as its second 2024 Captain of the Week.

The 21-year-old had a remarkable series at the plate against the West Michigan Whitecaps. He hit .381, leading Lake County with eight hits, seven runs, 17 total bases, three doubles, two home runs, and two hit-by-pitches. Mooney also tallied six RBI, a .458 on-base percentage, an .810 slugging percentage, and an impressive 1.268 OPS. His two home runs (tied for second), five extra-base hits (third), and seven runs (tied for third) all ranked top-three in the Midwest League this past week.

The right-handed hitter also made Captains history during their series in West Michigan. On Saturday, April 27, Mooney tied two franchise records with five hits and three doubles. In all, he went a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs, three doubles, an RBI, and a stolen base.

Mooney became the 16th Lake County player to record a five-hit game (first since Bobby Ison on August 17, 2016), and 13th to record a three-double game (first since Chase DeLauter on July 9, 2023). He also became the first Minor League player this season to record at least five hits, three runs, and a stolen base in a game.

So far this year, Mooney ranks top-10 in the Midwest League in home runs (five, second), slugging percentage (.661, second), total bases (41, third), extra-base hits (10, tied for third), OPS (1.040, sixth), and batting average (.339, eighth).

Mooney was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in the seventh round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Duke. He had a productive career with the Blue Devils, hitting .305 with 141 hits, 30 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 68 RBI, 63 walks, and 33 stolen bases in 117 games over two seasons. In 2023, he garnered Second Team ABCA/Rawlings All-Region and First Team All-ACC honors, and was named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award (best college shortstop). Mooney was also named to the 2022 ACC All-Freshman Team.

Mooney was assigned to Lake County’s 2024 Opening Day roster after playing 17 games for the Single-A Lynchburg Hillcats last season. He recorded 10 hits, eight runs, four doubles, four RBI, seven walks, and four stolen bases with Lynchburg last year.

Mooney will look to continue his recent success this week, as the Captains will host a seven-game series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The series is set to begin on Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake. The series will be broadcast on both the Bally Live app and MiLB.TV, with social media coverage courtesy of @LCCaptains on both X and Instagram.
