EASTLAKE, OH – After each series this season, the Lake County Captains will spotlight a Captain of the Week, presented by Official League, showcasing a player and their strong performance over the previous week.

For the week of June 25 through 30, Lake County is recognizing INF Angel Genao as its 11th Captain of the Week for the 2024 season.

Genao is Baseball America’s 65th-ranked MLB prospect and MLB Pipeline’s 11th-ranked Cleveland prospect.

The 20-year-old had a strong series at the plate against the Great Lakes Loons, ranking top-10 among qualified Midwest League hitters in batting average (.471, second), on-base percentage (.526, tied for third), OPS (1.114, seventh), and slugging percentage (.588, 10th) during this span. He also ranked tied for fifth in the Midwest League with eight hits.

Additionally, Genao led Captains hitters with two doubles, while ranking top-five in: total bases (10, second), RBI (three, tied for third), stolen bases (two, fourth), and runs (three, tied for fifth).

Since being promoted to Lake County on June 3, Genao ranks top-five in the Midwest League in: doubles (seven, tied for second), batting average (.313, fifth), and hits (25, fifth). He also ranks second among Captains hitters with 35 total bases during this span, tallying one home run, eight RBI, six stolen bases, and an .806 OPS.

Overall this season, in 63 combined games across Lake County and Single-A Lynchburg, Genao ranks tied for eighth in Minor League Baseball with 21 doubles, while ranking 11th in full-season MiLB (Single-A through Triple-A) with a .332 batting average.

He is one of just two players in all of MiLB with at least a .330 batting average, 30 extra-base hits (31), and 15 stolen bases (18) this year.

Genao was signed by the Cleveland Guardians as an international free agent on January 15, 2021 out of Castillo, Dominican Republic. The switch-hitter made a strong first impression at the professional level, hitting .265 with 40 hits, 36 runs, four doubles, four triples, one home run, 14 RBI, 16 stolen bases, and a .786 OPS in 46 games in the Dominican Summer League.

One year later, in 46 combined games across the DSL and Single-A Lynchburg, Genao hit .299 with 53 hits, seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, 21 RBI, six stolen bases, and a .763 OPS. He also recorded two hits, one double, and one RBI in the 2022 Carolina League Playoffs.

Then, Genao spent all of last season with Single-A Lynchburg, hitting .263 with 73 hits, 20 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 32 RBI, six stolen bases, and a .730 OPS in 72 games.

Finally, at the time of his promotion to Lake County, Genao was one of the premier players in the Carolina League with Single-A Lynchburg. In 44 games, he led the league in hits (61), extra-base hits (23), and total bases (99), while ranking top-10 in: batting average (.341, second), slugging percentage (.553, second), OPS (.936, second), doubles (14, tied for second), RBI (39, tied for third), triples (three, tied for sixth), runs (31, eighth), and home runs (six, tied for ninth).

Genao will look to continue his recent success this week, as the Midwest League East First Half Division Champion Captains are set to play a six-game, home-and-home series against the Dayton Dragons. The series is set to begin on Monday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Day Air Ballpark in Dayton. All six games will be broadcast on the Bally Live app and MiLB.TV, with social media coverage courtesy of @LCCaptains on X and Instagram.
