2024 started without a familiar face at the beach. Miguel Pabon, who played 83 games for the Pelicans in 2023, was not called during player introductions on Opening Night.

After dealing with an injury during spring training, Pabon stayed in Arizona at the Cubs’ complex until late April, when the fan-favorite joined the Pelicans roster. The 2024 season marks his seventh year in the organization after being drafted in 2018.

2023 was a learning year for Pabon. He had just transitioned to the catcher position, and it was his first full season behind the plate. He saw a good amount of success, as he was the main catcher for a team that won the first-half championship and went on to make the playoffs.

In 61 games behind the plate, Pabon caught 31 runners trying to steal. He also spent time as the first baseman.

Entering this season, Pabon knew he could get better. Since joining the Pelicans on April 30th, the Puerto Rican has caught 29 games with 14 runners caught stealing. He’s also hit two home runs, double his amount from last year.

“Last year, I was trying to learn a lot of stuff,” Pabon said. “This year, I know who I am and I know what it takes to be in this league. I’m able to more helpful to the young guys that are new on this team.”

Getting more catching experience also means getting to know more of the pitchers. Pabon has become more comfortable with each pitcher who takes the mound because of his familiarity.

“I’m able to recognize every single guy that comes into the game,” Pabon said. “I’m pretty good at knowing what they’re good and bat at. If I need to yell or talk slowly to them to get something extra out of them, I think that’s something that’s really helpful for these guys.”

Pabon has become a fan-favorite in Myrtle Beach because of his vibrant personality and ability to connect with not only the players but also the fans. The support that he’s received has been crucial to the success he’s seen in his professional career.

“Since last year, Myrtle Beach has basically been a home for me,” Pabon said. “It feels good to see people give you love.”

Pabon hopes to keep growing behind the plate while continuing to makes other around him in the clubhouse better.
