Durham's Mike Marjama broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, three-run home run in the 10th inning to power the Bulls past Norfolk 3-0 Friday night at Harbor Park.
The two teams traded zeroes all night until the Bulls put together a two-out rally against Shairon Martis (0-1) in the 10th. Willy Adames and Jake Bauers worked back-to-back two-out walks from Martis before Marjama connected on a 3-2 pitch for his sixth home run of the season. The runs were the first allowed by Martis in six outings since he joined the Tides on June 17th.
Durham's Ryne Stanek made the lead hold up, striking out the side in the 10th to earn the save and give the Bulls a victory in the opener of the four-game set.
Norfolk starter Chris Lee turned in a very strong effort, as he held the Bulls to just two hits over six shutout innings of work. The 24-year-old left-hander walked three and struck out one, throwing 52 of his 86 pitches for strikes as he turned in his third Quality Start in his last five outings. Rated as the #6 prospect in the Orioles system by MLB.com, Lee now owns a 1.85 ERA (7 ER, 34.0 IP) through six starts at Harbor Park, compared to a 9.23 ERA in 10 starts on the road.
Durham starter Ryan Yarbrough, an Old Dominion University product, matched Lee's effort by limiting the Tides to three hits over seven shutout frames. Yarbrough walked two and struck out four, lowering his ERA in four starts against the Tides this year to 1.71 (5 ER, 26.1 IP).
Chris Dickerson paced Norfolk's offense with three hits, while Chance Sisco added a pair of singles. The three-hit game was the second in a row for Dickerson, who upped his average to .272 in the setback.
Andrew Kittredge (5-1) earned the victory with two shutout innings of relief.
The two clubs will continue their series on Saturday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Jayson Aquino (2-7, 4.50) will make the start for Norfolk and be opposed by right-hander Austin Pruitt (0-0, 1.04). On Saturday, the Tides will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Naval Station Norfolk by wearing camouflage jerseys, and there will be a postgame fireworks show courtesy of Ford.
Notes: The game was delayed for 25 minutes at the beginning of the 10th inning due to a bank of lights going out in right field…David Washington walked in the contest to extend his on-base streak to 26 games… Johnny Giavotella had his 11-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-4 night.
