Rancho Cucamonga, CA – The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes got solid production from some recent newcomers, defeating the Inland Empire 66ers by a final of 9-4 on Saturday night at LoanMart Field.
The Rancho pitching staff held to Inland Empire to just three hits, overcoming a 14-walk performance to secure their second win through the first five games of the series, giving themselves a chance at a six-game split with a potential win on Sunday.
Bubba Alleyne and Dalton Rushing combined for six hits out of the top two spots in the lineup and Kyle Nevin collected his first two hits and first RBI as a pro, leading the way for Rancho.
The Quakes jumped on 66ers’ starter Chase Chaney in the first inning, taking an early 3-0 advantage. Yeiner Fernandez, Yunior Garcia and Luis Rodriguez all contributed by driving in a run in the first.
Inland didn’t get anything going against Quakes’ starter Peter Heubeck, who fired 2.1 innings of work to get the night started. Reliever Jerming Rosario (4-6) got touched for an unearned run in the fifth, as Inland finally got on the board, making it 3-1.
The Quakes answered with three in the bottom of the inning though and two more in the sixth, taking a commanding 8-1 lead.
Thanks to some command issues in the seventh by the Quakes’ pitching staff, the 66ers got three back to make it 8-4, but would get no closer.
Garcia capped his three-hit, two-RBI game with an RBI single in the last of the eighth, rounding out the scoring at 9-4.
Madison Jeffrey worked around a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to lock it down in a non-save situation.
The Quakes (17-18, 53-48) will look for a series-split on Sunday, as they send Maddux Bruns (0-2) to the mound, as he’ll take on Inland Empire’s Kelvin Caseres (3-2) in the finale.
