Fresno, CA – The Fresno Grizzlies tallied twice in the last of the seventh inning to take the lead for good, as they downed Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night, winning 2-1 at Chukchansi Park.
A two-run single from Daniel Amaral put the Grizzlies ahead to stay and gave them their fourth straight win to open the six-game set.
Leading 1-0 on Wilman Diaz’s second homer of the year, the Quakes got into trouble in the seventh, as Brandon Neeck walked back-to-back hitters to start the inning.
With the bases loaded and one out, Neeck (0-3) was removed in favor of Jon Edwards. Amaral followed with a two-run single putting Fresno up, 2-1.
The Quakes threatened in the ninth with back-to-back hits by Josue De Paula and Thayron Liranzo, respectively, but Zach Agnos recovered and struck out both Joe Vetrano and Luis Rodriguez to end the game for his league-best 21st save and third in the series.
Fresno’s Sergio Sanchez (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings for the win.
Rancho starter Christian Romero was brilliant in a no-decision, allowing three hits over 5.2 innings of scoreless work.
On Saturday, the Quakes (15-19, 54-46) will try to break their four-game skid, sending Jared Karros (2-2) to the mound against lefty Albert Pacheco (4-1) at 6:50pm.
