Rochester got on the board early in the top half of the first, as a 1B Matt Adams double plated 2B Darren Baker. The offense followed with another RBI double in the second, this time off the bat of SS Richie Martin Jr. to extend the lead to 2-0. 3B Jeter Downs, making his return to the Red Wings after a stint with the Nationals, drove in DH Travis Blankenhorn in the fourth to extend the lead to three
Red Wings pitching held the RailRiders scoreless until an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh cut the lead to two. Rochester added an insurance run in the ninth on a homer from Blankenhorn, his fifth of the year to give the Wings a 4-1 lead. RHP Jordan Weems closed the door in the bottom, and the Red Wings evened the series at two games apiece.
RHP Paolo Espino (1-1, 0.82) started on the mound for Rochester, and picked up his first win of the year. The Panama native worked 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts. RHP Luis Reyes, RHP Gerson Moreno, and RHP Jordan Weems followed in relief, covering the final four frames. Weems picked up his second save of the year after pitching a scoreless ninth. Scranton/WB starting pitcher Randy Vasquez took the loss for the RailRiders.
Rochester went 1/2 on ABS challenges in the contest, winning their first challenge of the year and subsequently the first in franchise history.
The Diamond Pro Player of the game is Red Wings starter RHP Paolo Espino, who picked up his first Triple-A win since 8/29/2019 with Fresno. The right-hander threw five scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
Rochester will look to take a three games to two series lead over Scranton W/B in game five on Saturday. RHP Jose Urena (NR) will make his Red Wings debut against RailRiders RHP Ryan Weber (2-3, 6.18). First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m.
