SKY SOX TAKE SECOND STRAIGHT GAME OVER DODGERS
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox won a second straight game over the Oklahoma City Dodgers Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field with a 4-3 final. Aaron Wilkerson made his first start of 2018 for the Sky Sox since being activated off of the disabled list, tossing five and two-thirds innings while allowing just two runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
Oklahoma City got into the scoring column first in the Mother's Day afternoon game at Security Service Field. In the second, the Dodgers broke the scoreless game with a solo run thanks to Rocky Gale's third double of the season with two outs to bring around Jake Peter, who led off the inning with a single. In the third, Oklahoma City plated another run following back-to-back doubles by Alex Verdugo and Kyle Garlick to make it a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the third, the Sky Sox broke into action with a pair of runs to tie things up. Shane Opitz led the frame off with a single followed by a walk by Gabriel Noriega. After Wilkerson sacrificed to move the runners into scoring position, Nate Orf dribbled a groundball to second to plate the first run. Kyle Wren then delivered a two-out single to centerfield to bring Noriega in and tie things up at two apiece.
In the bottom of the sixth, after Brett Phillips knocked a one-out single to get the frame going, a wild throw by second baseman Donovan Solano would send Phillips all the way to third base. After a pop out by Eric Sogard, Tyler Heineman drove in Phillips to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Tyrone Taylor extended the Sky Sox lead in the bottom of the eighth with his third home run of the season, making it a 4-2 Colorado Springs advantage.
In the ninth, the Dodgers made a final push to rally back from the two-run deficit, plating one run, but ultimately, stranding the tying run on second base to make it a 4-3 final.
The Sky Sox continue into game three of the four-game series against the Oklahoma City Dodgers at Security Service Field tomorrow at 6:40 p.m. Following the four games against the Dodgers, the Sky Sox will welcome to town the Memphis Redbirds, top affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Tomorrow's Expectation: In the third game of both the homestand and the four-game series against the Oklahoma City Dodgers, the Sky Sox are sending righty Bubba Derby to the mound to face southpaw Manny Bañuelos for the Dodgers.
Peralta's Memorable Debut: In his Major League debut, right-hander Freddy Peralta made history. In five and two-thirds innings of work, he struck out 13 batters and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. His 13 strikeouts set a new Brewers rookie record. The most recent pitchers to log double-digit Ks in Major League debut: Freddy Peralta 13, 2018; Matt Harvey 11, 2012; Thomas Diamond 10, 2010; Stephen Strasburg 14, 2010. Peralta is the fifth pitcher since 1908 to strike out 13+ in his Major League debut [Freddy Peralta 13, 2018 Stephen Strasburg 14, 2010 J.R. Richard 15, 1971 Karl Spooner 15, 1954 Cliff Melton 13, 1937].
Wilkerson's Return: In his first start of 2018 since being activated off of the disabled list, righty Aaron Wilkerson did not disappoint. In five and two-thirds innings of work, the Texas native allowed just two runs on six hits and fanned six Oklahoma City batters. In 2016 for Colorado Springs, Wilkerson went 2-6 with a 6.42 ERA over 11 starts with the Sky Sox. Last season, he made his MLB debut with the Brewers, making two starts while going 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA.
Battle of the American North: The fight is on as the two top teams in the Pacific Coast League American North duke it out. The Sky Sox (23-13) currently trail the Dodgers (24-11) by one-and-a-half games after delivering them their 11th loss of 2018 Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field. Last season, the Sky Sox finished on top of the conference over the Dodgers with a 10-game lead (80-57 record).
Out-Hit W: Despite being out-hit 8-7 by Oklahoma City, the Sky Sox pulled off a 4-3 victory. The squad now improves to 7-7 in games when out-hit by their opponents.
300 Club: On Thursday, Kyle Wren became the 18th player in Sky Sox history with 300 regular season games played. Wren is now one game away from tying Choo Freeman and Jayhawk Owens for 16th with 303 regular season games played.
Orf Stays Hot: Despite ending a 20-game streak after going hitless in Friday's final game in Nashville, infielder Nate Orf continued his hitting ways in games one and two at Security Service Field, going 1-for-4 in each game with an RBI in each as well. Over 12 games in May, he is batting .385 (20-for-52) with five doubles and six RBI.
That Was Wild: The Sky Sox 2-1 victory over the Dodgers in game one marked just the second walk-off win for Colorado Springs in the 2018 season. The win came by way of two wild pitches by Ariel Hernández, who surrendered a two-base wild pitch and then a game-ending wild pitch. The last walk-off for the Sky Sox came at home on April 12 when Jacob Nottingham delivered a game-winning base hit to give the Sky Sox the 7-6 victory.
Just A Bit Inside: With the hit batsmen by Tim Dillard on Saturday night, he has tied Jason Young for first place in career-hit batsmen with Sky Sox, sitting at 25 total. Jason Young pitched for the Sky Sox from 2002 to 2005.
Scoring First: The Sky Sox improved to a 15-5 record on Saturday night when striking first on the board in a game. Colorado Springs also improves to 3-4 on Saturday games and 9-6 in the American North.
This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox are in midst of an eight-game, nine-day homestand that will see them host the Dodgers for four games followed by the Memphis Redbirds for four games, with a day of rest in between series.
