Express Win Streak at Nine After Topping Space Cowboys 6-3

Round Rock Advances to 3-0 in Series With Defeat of Sugar Land on Thursday

SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Round Rock Express (25-17 | 69-47) defeated the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (14-28 | 47-70) by a final score of 6-3 at Constellation Field on Thursday night behind another come late-inning comeback. The E-Train extended their season-long win streak to nine games.

Round Rock reliever RHP Glenn Otto (1-1, 3.96) earned the win in his second appearance out of the bullpen, tossing 2.0 hitless innings with three walks and five strikeouts. Sugar Land reliever RHP Misael Tamarez (0-8, 6.33) walked away with a blown-save loss after 3.1 innings that saw six runs, three hits, four walks and five strikeouts. Express RHP Chase Lee notched a save after recording the final out in the ninth inning with two inherited runners on base.

Along the Train Tracks:

  • Sugar Land was on the board first and went up 2-0 in the third inning. C Andrew Knapp singled then advanced on an error and wild pitch before DH Luke Berryhill The two were on the corners for SS Dixon Machado, who grounded out to score Knapp. LF Michael Brantley then singled to score Berryhill from third.
  • The Space Cowboys lead was extended to 3-0 when 1B J.J. Matijevic smacked a solo home run in the home half of the fourth inning.
  • Round Rock’s second hit of the night was a two-run jack from SS Davis Wendzel after C Sam Huff walked, which pulled the E-Train within one run in the sixth inning.
  • In the seventh, 1B Dustin Harris walked and RF Sandro Fabian singled before 3B Dio Arias knocked Harris in with a single to tie the game at 3-3. A walk to SS Jonathan Ornelas loaded the bases for CF Elier Hernandez, who sent two runs home with a double. The inning’s scoring was capped off by a single from Huff, which gave Round Rock a 6-3 lead.
  • Sugar Land had the tying run at the plate in the ninth after a single and a walk led off the inning. RF Corey Julks grounded into a double play and Round Rock RHP Chase Lee retired the last batter on a flyout to secure the win.

E-Train Excerpts:

  • Round Rock SS Davis Wendzel launched a two-run home run in the sixth inning, which was his 23rd knock of the season and his second in the last four games. Wendzel’s 23 home runs has him tied with Oklahoma City INF Michael Busch and Salt Lake OF Jo Adell for third-most in the Pacific Coast League.
  • The E-Train’s RBI leader, CF Elier Hernandez, tacked on two more tonight after his two-RBI double put the go-ahead runs on the board. Hernandez’s 81 RBI are the second-most in the league behind Tacoma INF Jake Scheiner, who has 89.
  • After Thursday’s 6-3 win, Round Rock has a nine-game winning streak, which is the longest winning streak since June 13-21, 2006. It is just the seventh all-time streak of eight or more wins in franchise history.

Next up: The Express will face the Space Cowboys in game four of the series at Constellation Field on Friday night. Round Rock RHP Zak Kent (0-0, 1.00) is slated to start against Sugar Land RHP Brandon Bielak (1-2, 5.91). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT.
