ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Sugar Land Skeeters (28-22) used three solo home runs to earn a 3-1 win over the Round Rock Express (27-24) on Saturday night at Dell Diamond. The win puts the visitors ahead 2-1 in the series with three games left to go.
Round Rock starter LHP Brock Burke (0-4, 8.18) suffered the night’s loss after allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven in his 4.2-inning performance. On the winning side, Sugar Land starter RHP JP France (1-0, 2.03) threw for three hits, five walks and nine strikeouts in 5.2 shutout innings on the mound.
After a scoreless first three innings, Sugar Land’s first run of the night crossed home when RF Jose Siri hit a homer to left-center field for a 1-0 lead. The Skeeters increased their lead to 2-0 with another solo shot, this time from CF Bryan De La Cruz in the sixth.
Round Rock plated its single run of the night in the seventh frame as SS Yonny Hernandez was hit by a pitch before stealing second base then advancing to third on a wild pitch by Sugar Land RHP Michael Kelly. 2B Delino DeShields sent Hernandez home with a single, cutting the Sugar Land lead to 2-1.
De La Cruz tallied his second solo home run of the night and third for the Skeeters in the eighth inning as he launched a bomb into left field to extend the gap to 3-1, a score that held to be the final.
The Express tried to mount a comeback in the ninth as Hernandez hit a leadoff single that was followed by a DeShields walk before 1B Curtis Terry drew a two-out walk to load the bases. With DH Yohel Pozo up to bat, Skeeters RHP Riley Ferrell escaped the jam, striking out Friday’s walk-off home run hitter for the final out to earn the save.
The two teams meet for an Independence Day showdown on Sunday evening at Dell Diamond. Express RHP Tyler Phillips (0-1, 12.27) is set to get the 4th of July start against Skeeters RHP Brett Conine (5-1, 3.57) with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. and fireworks scheduled for after the contest.
