SAN ANTONIO - The Flying Chanclas have a flare for the dramatic as they came through with yet another walk-off win against the Memphis Redbirds. San Antonio came from behind in the ninth inning to edge Memphis 4-3. It was the third walk-off for San Antonio against the Redbirds in four games.
Tyler Saladino made his sixth start at first base on the season and matched a career-high with four hits. For the first time in his career he tallied three doubles in a game including his walk-off ground rule double in the bottom of the ninth inning. His lone single of the night came in the fifth inning when he drove in a run to put San Antonio in front 2-1.
Trailing 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, David Freitas drew a walk to spark the rally. He was pinch run for by Tuffy Gosewisch. Jake Hager then picked up his fourth pinch hit of the season. Corey Ray went down on strikes to send the Flying Chanclas down to their final out. Mauricio Dubón worked a walk to bring up Saladino. A Tommy Layne breaking ball in the dirt bounced up and appeared to hit Saladino but was ruled a ball, giving Saladino the opportunity to be the hero. Saladino seized the chance and smacked a ground rule double to right center field to give San Antonio the dramatic victory.
San Antonio drew first blood in the second inning when Nate Orf yanked a solo home run down the left field line. The lead was short-lived as Memphis responded with a run of its own on a Tommy Edman's run-scoring single in the top of the third.
Tyler O'Neill and Adolis García each slugged solo home runs for Memphis in the sixth inning off Missions starter Thomas Jankins who logged his second straight quality start. Jankins allowed three runs in six innings as his season ERA remained at 4.50.
The Missions and Redbirds continue their five-game set Friday at Wolff Stadium. Right-hander Jimmy Nelson is scheduled to make his third rehab appearance and will start for San Antonio against right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon for the Redbirds. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
