SAN ANTONIO -The Round Rock Express overcame a ninth inning deficit to defeat the San Antonio Missions 4-2 Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium.
San Antonio took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning when Troy Stokes Jr. slugged his sixth home run of the season, a two-run blast onto the left field berm.
Things unraveled for the Missions in the top of the ninth inning as the Express tagged the right-hander for a trio of runs to complete the come-from-behind victory. Sanchez struck out the first batter he faced before Nick Tanielu and Josh Rojas scorched back-to-back doubles to tie the game followed by a run on a fielder's choice.
The Missions threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning as they brought the winning run to the plate but were unable to bring home any runs.
Corbin Burnes and Bubba Derby combined to turn in a sterling performance on the mound for San Antonio and gave the Missions a chance to win. Burnes served as the opener for the Missions and needed just 24 pitches, 17 of which were strikes, to get through two innings while striking out a pair of batters.
Derby entered in what was just his second relief outing of the season and shut down the Express with six brilliant innings. He yielded just one unearned run on three hits while fanning five batters. Derby kept Round Rock's hitters off balance all night long as he logged his fourth outing of six innings in his last six appearances.
The Express didn't register their first base runner until the top of the fifth when Josh Rojas singled through the right side of the infield off Derby. Round Rock finally broke through in the sixth inning as they plated an unearned run following a passed ball by David Freitas.
The Missions continue their series with Round Rock Wednesday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium. Neither team has announced their starting pitcher for Thursday's game. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
