Summary

Dayan Frias lifted a first inning grand slam to back Tommy Mace’s strong outing and guide the Akron RubberDucks to a 6-3 win over the Altoona Curve on Friday night at Canal Park.

Turning Point

Akron got the offense going in the first as Christian Cairo and Kahlil Watson opened the game with back-to-back walks. After the Curve got two quick outs, RubberDucks batters worked three straight walks to bring home two and give Akron the lead. Frias broke the consecutive walks by launching a grand slam into the bullpens in right-center to make it 6-0 Akron.

Mound Presence

Mace was outstanding for the RubberDucks in his start. The only two runs Altoona was able to get off the right-hander were on solo home runs in the second and seventh. In total, Mace struck out five over seven and two-thirds while scattering six hits. Erik Sabrowski struck out the only batter he faced in the eighth. Andrew Walters allowed a run and struck out one in the ninth.

Duck Tales

Akron’s offense was held in check after the grand slam. Watson’s single in the second and hits by Frias in the fourth and sixth were the only other Akron base knocks on the night.

Notebook

Mace’s start was the longest outing by a RubberDucks starter since Sean Brady tossed 7.2 innings on July 14, 2018…After tonight’s performance, Mace now leads the Eastern League in wins (5) and innings pitched (46.1)…Frias has both of the RubberDucks grand slams this season…Game Time: 2:25 (0:48 delay)…Attendance: 3,751.
