The Biloxi Shuckers (47-35) fell 2-0 in a rain-shortened, five-inning game against the Mississippi Braves (34-49) on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.
Biloxi had a scoring opportunity go by the wayside in the first. Troy Stokes Jr. drew a one-out, followed by a pair of singles from Jake Gatewood and Lucas Erceg to load the bases. LHP Ricardo Sánchez (W, 1-2) got Blake Allemand to pop out to short and induced a groundout from Clint Coulter, stranding three runners.
The M-Braves responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Connor Lien doubled off RHP Trey Supak (L, 0-5) but stayed at second after a pair of strikeouts and a walk to Tyler Marlette. Luis Valenzuela lifted a ball into right field that dropped beyond the reach of Allemand, scoring Lien to make it 1-0. Valenzuela was thrown out attempting to take second on the throw, ending the frame.
Mississippi added another run in third with a two-out rally. Tyler Neslony walked and moved to second on a single before scoring on a Marlette single up the middle. Yet again, the last out was recorded on the bases, keeping the score at 2-0.
The game went into a rain delay in the fourth with a pair of men on base for Biloxi. After the delay, Supak bounced out to short to bring the inning to a close. The rain returned in the bottom of the fifth, soaking the infield, mound and home plate without the tarp on the field. Following another delay, the game was ruled an official contest, bringing the night to a close.
Game two of a four-game series starts at 7 PM on Thursday night. RHP Luis Ortiz (1-3, 4.20) takes the mound for the Shuckers opposite LHP Bruce Zimmermann (0-0, 1.42). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/ FM 100.9, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
