In a bizarre ending, the Biloxi Shuckers (32-55) were walked off 5-4 by the Mississippi Braves (51-36) on a two-run homer that was ruled a sacrifice fly on appeal on Thursday night at Trustmark Park.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, RHP Braden Webb (L, 4-6) entered for the Shuckers and struck out the side on just 11 pitches. RHP Brandon White (W, 4-2) came on to pitch the ninth for the M-Braves and retired the side in order, sending the game to the bottom of the ninth tied at 4-4.
C.J. Alexander drew a walk to start the home half of the frame and stole second with Wendell Rijo batting. Webb worked to a 2-2 count to Rijo who hit a ball over the fence that appeared at the time to be a two-run home run. However, the Shuckers appealed to first base as Rijo seemed to miss the bag, and Rijo was ruled out, meaning only one run scored to give Mississippi a 5-4 win.
Biloxi scored first in the top of the second inning. Alexander Palma led off with a solo home run, his tenth of the year, to put the Shuckers up 1-0. After a groundout, the next three Shuckers’ hitters reached on two walks and a single, loading the bases for Cam Devanney. The Shuckers’ third baseman struck out for the second out, but David Hamilton cleared the bases with a triple to right, widening the Shuckers advantage to 4-0.
The M-Braves were able to recover a run in the bottom of the second inning on a hit by pitch, a single and a fielder’s choice, drawing within three runs at 4-1.
Mississippi would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a couple of home runs. Trey Harris singled with one out and after a strikeout of Jefrey Ramos, Jalen Miller hit a two-run blast to left, his ninth of the year, bringing the M-Braves within one. Hendrik Clementina went back-to-back with Miller, hitting a solo home run to tie the game at 4-4.
The Shuckers were held to just one baserunner after the fourth inning when Chad Spanberger reached on a fielding error in the seventh. LHP Leo Crawford ran into trouble for the Shuckers in the seventh inning when Justin Dean singled with one out and Braden Shewmake doubled off the right field wall, but Crawford induced a groundout that kept the runners from advancing and struck out Harris to strand two runners.
Biloxi continues their six-game series with the M-Braves on Friday night at Trustmark Park. RHP Carlos Luna (1-2, 2.65) takes the mound for the Shuckers against M-Braves’ RHP Victor Vodnik (0-4, 6.28) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9.
