A three-hit, four RBI night from Cam Devanney helped fuel a 7-3 victory for the Biloxi Shuckers (42-46, 8-13 2nd Half) over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (45-40, 10-11 2nd Half) and Marlins’ #1 prospect RHP Eury Pérez (L, 3-2) on Sunday night.
It was a pitchers’ duel for the first three frames. RHP Carlos Luna (W, 4-4) hurled three perfect innings to start the night while the Shuckers’ got a pair of hits off Pérez. Biloxi had a scoring opportunity in the third when Gabe Holt singled and moved to third on a failed pickoff throw, but the second baseman was stranded, keeping the game scoreless.
The Wahoos broke through in the fourth on back-to-back solo home runs to take a 2-0 lead. They were two of three total hits allowed by Luna over five frames.
Biloxi’s offense responded immediately in the home half of the fourth. Garrett Mitchell started the inning with a hustle double and Joey Wiemer followed with a two-bagger of his own, putting men at second and third with no outs. Devanney drove in his first run of the night with a sacrifice fly, pulling the Shuckers within a run at 2-1. Tristen Lutz then singled to right and Noah Campbell drove in a pair with a double to the left-field gap, vaulting the Shuckers to a 3-2 lead.
Devanney added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single to left, making it 4-2. RHP Noah Zavolas (S, 1) entered in the sixth and surrendered a run on a single by Ray-Patrick Didder but answered by retiring the next eight men in a row.
A solo home run by Brent Diaz in the bottom of the sixth moved the Shuckers back in front 5-3. Biloxi capped their scoring in the seventh inning when Wiemer singled, stole second and scored on a two-run blast to left by Devanney, his 15th homer of the year and third hit of the night, widening the Shuckers lead to 7-3.
Zavolas worked out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the eighth and retired the side in order to close out the game for the Shuckers. The righty worked four innings and gave up just one run on two hits while striking out four. It is the first save for Zavolas since July 4, 2018 when he was with Everett in the Mariners’ organization.
