The Biloxi Shuckers (32-53) allowed five home runs as part of an 8-2 defeat against the Mississippi Braves (49-36) on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.
David Hamilton led off the contest with a triple to right field on the first pitch of the game, his first three-bagger at Double-A. After a strikeout, David Fry worked a walk and Alexander Palma singled to left, easily driving in Hamilton to put the Shuckers ahead 1-0.
Mississippi would jump ahead in the bottom of the second inning. Shea Langeliers led off the inning with a single to right and Drew Lugbauer followed with an opposite field home run, his 13th of the year, to move the M-Braves in front 2-1.
A blast of their own brought the Shuckers back level in the top of the third inning. Fry worked an eight pitch at bat before depositing a home run over the left-field wall, his 10th of the year, to tie the game at 2-2. Palma and Luis Castro each singled in the next two at bats, but the Shuckers were unable to drive in another run.
In the home half of the third, RHP Jesus Castillo (L, 3-7) sat the first two batters down in order, but Braden Shewmake doubled to left field and Langeliers hit a two-run homer to left in the ensuing at bat, his 18th of the year, to vault the M-Braves back in front 4-2.
RHP Freddy Tarnock (W, 2-0) retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth before coming back out for the sixth. Castro led off the frame with a single and after a strikeout Tarnock was lifted from the game for RHP Troy Bacon (H, 4). The righty struck out the first batter he faced, but Cam Devanney singled and Ryan Aguilar walked, loading up the bases for Hamilton. The Shuckers’ shortstop hit a line drive, but it was right at Wendell Rijo, ending the Biloxi threat.
In the home half of the sixth, Mississippi would add on to their advantage with back-to-back home runs by Langelier and Lugbauer, pushing the M-Braves lead to 6-2. Mississippi would tag on two more in the bottom of the seventh as C.J. Alexander hit a lead-off homer, his ninth of the year and fifth of the night for the M-Braves, and Langeliers singled in another run for his fourth hit of the night.
Biloxi continues their series with the M-Braves on Wednesday night. RHP Justin Bullock (2-0, 2.45) takes the hill for the Shuckers opposite M-Braves’ RHP Alan Rangel (0-1, 9.00) for a 6:35 pm first pitch at Trustmark Park. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9.
