Garrett Mitchell delivered a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning as part of a 6-1 win for the Biloxi Shuckers (44-47, 10-14 2nd Half) over the Montgomery Biscuits (42-44, 14-10 2nd Half) on Thursday night at MGM Park.
Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, it appeared the Shuckers tied the game in the home half of the frame. Mitchell legged out an infield single and then raced around to score on a double to the gap by Tristen Lutz. On an appeal to third, Mitchell was called out for not touching the bag, keeping Biloxi off the board.
In the bottom of the seventh, Thomas Dillard started the frame with a double and was replaced at second on a fielder’s choice by Gabe Holt. Brent Diaz then worked a nine-pitch at bat before singling to right, driving in Holt to knot the contest at 1-1.

RHP Robbie Hitt (W, 3-2) spun a scoreless top of the eighth inning, setting the stage for the Shuckers’ offense in the bottom of the frame. Andruw Monasterio worked a lead-off walk against LHP John Doxakis (L, 1-4), bringing up Mitchell, who blasted a two-run homer off the batters’ eye in center to put Biloxi up 3-1. Cam Devanney walked in his trip to the plate and Lutz brought him home with an opposite-field homer to right field, his eighth of the year, widening the Shuckers’ advantage to 5-1. Dillard went back-to-back with Lutz, homering off new hurler RHP Carlos Garcia to make it 6-1 Biloxi. RHP Nash Walters pitched a perfect ninth, extending his scoreless innings streak to 17.0 innings.

Though he didn’t factor into the decision, LHP Nick Bennett turned in a second consecutive quality start for the Shuckers. The southpaw allowed just one run on a solo homer by Kameron Misner in the third but limited the Biscuits to five hits while striking out eight.
Biloxi continues their six-game series against Montgomery on Friday night. LHP Brandon Knarr (1-3, 4.07) takes the hill for the Shuckers against Biscuits’ RHP Sean Hunley (3-1, 2.02) for a 6:35 pm first pitch.
