A night after a two-run homer delivered a win for the Biloxi Shuckers (64-42, 23-13 2nd Half), it was a two-run blast in the ninth by Drew Ellis that gave the Jackson Generals (58-46, 19-15) a 3-1 victory over Biloxi on Sunday afternoon at MGM Park.
Tied at 1-1 in the top of the ninth, RHP Cody Ponce (L, 1-3) entered for the Shuckers and retired Renae Martinez on one pitch. Jamie Westbrook then doubled to center, but Ponce coaxed a groundout from Pavin Smith for the second out. Ellis worked a 2-1 count before hitting a two-run homer to left, his 11th of the season, to put Jackson in front 3-1. RHP Michael Kohn (S, 9), who gave up a game-winning homer to Jake Gatewood on Saturday night, entered in the bottom of the frame and worked a perfect inning, securing the victory for the Generals.
Jackson took the early lead in the game against LHP Cameron Roegner. Jeffrey Baez singled to shallow center to lead off the third and Galli Cribbs Jr. tripled to the right-field corner, plating Baez to put Jackson up 1-0. Roegner allowed just two baserunners for the rest of his outing, striking out a career-high nine over six innings while not walking a batter.
Biloxi took their starter off the hook in the sixth. Cooper Hummel drew a pinch-hit walk to get the inning going and moved to second on a groundout by Corey Ray. Bruce Caldwell then singled through the left side, putting men on the corners with one out. Patrick Leonard delivered a sacrifice fly to center to score Hummel, evening the game at 1-1. RHP Matt Brill tossed a scoreless inning for the Generals in the seventh and RHP Cameron Gann (W, 2-2) picked up the win after spinning a perfect eighth against Biloxi.
