A night after shutting out the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (42-41), the Biloxi Shuckers (31-52) were held off the board in a 4-0 defeat on Saturday night at MGM Park.
RHP Carlos Luna (L, 1-2) got the start for the Shuckers and allowed just a hit the first time through the order. Peyton Burdick opened the scoring for Pensacola with a solo home run in the top of the third, his league-leading 19th of the year, to put the Blue Wahoos up 1-0. Luna would allow another run on three singles in the top of the fifth but allowed just two runs over six innings of work, not walking a batter while striking out five.
A pair of double plays eliminated the two best scoring chances for the Shuckers. In the bottom of the second inning, Luis Castro reached second on a two-base error by Zack Kone and Chad Spanberger followed with a single to right, putting men on the corners with no outs. After Brent Diaz popped out for the first out, Cam Devanney hit into a double play that ended the frame.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Devanney reached second on a throwing error by starter LHP Will Stewart (W, 5-5). Ryan Aguilar followed with a pop out and David Hamilton laced a single into right and moved to second on the throw to the plate, giving the Shuckers men on second and third with one out. Mitch Longo then bounced a ball back to the mound and both Devanney and Hamilton were tagged out in two separate run downs, dousing the Shuckers’ best chance to score.
Three Wahoos relievers would combine to pitch three perfect frames against the Shuckers, and Pensacola added two more in the top of the seventh on a two-RBI double by J.J. Bleday.
Needing a win to split their series, Biloxi concludes their series with the Blue Wahoos on Sunday afternoon. RHP Lucas Erceg (0-4, 6.52) gets the start for the Shuckers against Wahoos’ RHP Jeff Lindgren (3-7, 4.98) for a 5:05 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9.
