BILOXI, MS - RHP Merandy Gonzalez (W, 2-6) held the Biloxi Shuckers (63-47, 22-18) to just two hits over his first seven innings of work, aiding the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (43-65, 15-25) in a 5-1 win on Thursday night at MGM Park.
RHP Marcos Diplan (L, 1-2) allowed two runs through his five innings while scattering nine hits. The righty allowed his first run in the third inning when Brian Miller's two-out single scored on Brian Schales' double. In the top of the sixth, the Jumbo Shrimp loaded the bases with nobody out. After Diplan walked Eric Jagielo, RHP Miguel Sanchez came in to extinguish the fire. The righty stranded the bags full to keep the Shuckers within reach at 2-0.
Jacksonville added singular runs in each of the last four innings, including a 424-foot solo home run off the bat of Monte Harrison in the seventh.
Gonzalez did not allow a Shuckers to touch second base until the bottom of the eighth. Down 4-0, Biloxi found their opportunity when the first four batters reached with base hits. After Blake Allemand singled home Biloxi's first run, LHP Miguel Del Pozo (H, 1) inherited the same situation that Sanchez dealt with. With the bags full of Shuckers and nobody out, Del Pozo got Keston Hiura to roll over to third base. Schales stepped on the bag at third and fired home to complete the unorthodox 5-2 double play. Lucas Erceg then bounced out to first to end the threat in the eighth.
The Shuckers went quietly in the ninth as the Jumbo Shrimp picked up their first win in six tries at MGM Park this year.
The two sides are back at it on a Fireworks Friday at MGM Park tomorrow night. RHP Trey Supak (2-6, 3.90) toes the rubber against Jacksonville's RHP Kolton Mahoney (3-6, 4.20) with first pitch set for 6:35 PM CT.
