The Biloxi Shuckers (19-45) fell 2-1 in game one of their doubleheader against the Montgomery Biscuits (33-29) before their second game was suspended in the bottom of the second inning on Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.
Game 1
Montgomery opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jonathan Aranda was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Ruben Cardenas, giving the Biscuits a 1-0 lead.
The run in the top of the first was the lone run surrendered by RHP Jesus Castillo (L, 1-5) who allowed just four hits over five innings of work.
RHP Peyton Battenfield got the start for the Biscuits and after walking Garrett Mitchell to start the ballgame retired the next 10 batters he faced. David Fry singled with one out in the fourth inning but was stranded in scoring position.
LHP Dalton Moats (W, 2-0) entered in the top of the fifth inning and pitched around a single by Brent Diaz to start the frame. Moats returned for the sixth and Mitchell began the inning with an infield single. Brice Turang followed with a bunt single up the first-base line but was tagged out coming back to the bag by Xavier Edwards. During the play, Moats suffered a lower body injury that forced a stoppage of play. When play resumed, RHP Jack Labosky (H,6) recorded the next two outs in order to keep the Shuckers off the board.
Montgomery added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Aranda. RHP Chris Muller (S, 5) came on in the seventh for the Biscuits and got the first two outs before Chad Spanberger hit a solo home run to right, his fifth of the year, bring the Shuckers within a run at 2-1, but Muller recorded the last out, ending the contest.
Game Two
The Shuckers yet again took advantage of facing Biscuits’ opener LHP Faustino Carrera in the first inning. After Mitchell worked a lead-off walk and moved to second on a ground out by Mitch Longo, Fry singled to left, driving in Mitchell to put the Shuckers up 1-0 three batters into the game. Alexander Palma then launched a two-run homer on the first pitch from Carrera, putting the Shuckers up 3-0. After one batter hit for the Biscuits in the bottom of the second inning, the game was suspended due to rain. A date to resume the game will be selected in the near future.
Following an off day on Monday, the Shuckers travel to Trustmark Park to start a six-game series against the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday. RHP Noah Zavolas is scheduled to start the opener against the M-Braves, while RHP Odalvi Javier is set to toe the slab first for Mississippi. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9.
